I might have come up with a really good idea for a hayrack for my 2 new fosters… if it’s safe… I have an old redwood gazebo shaped birdhouse that I took the inside out of so now it’s just a wood gazebo shaped container that I stuffed with hay! It’s a bit messy- but I’ve given up on a nonmessy hay rack anyway! I just want to double check that redwood is ok if they chew on it. It’s not treated or painted with anything. I’ll have to take a pic of it and post it- I think I did a really bad job explaining it

I just googled it and it came up that redwood was bad, along the same lines as cedar.   I only found it at the one site so I couldn’t say for sure, but unless someone can confirm otherwise I wouldn’t put it in there.

oh no… that would be sad… I guess I’ll have to go back to using it to feed birds

I think red wood is toxic to bunnies. Maybe aged redwood is ok , thou I doubt it – sorry!

yeah, I was trying to figure out online if maybe redwood is processed or something the way that the pine pellets are that makes them non-toxic but I couldn’t find anything so I gave up on the idea

Luckily they don’t seem to notice that the cardboard box their hay is in right now isn’t very pretty!

Redwood and any hard wood like  walnut, is not good for a rabbit and can be toxic.  It’s the tannins in it.  For example think about when you get a redwood splinter in your finger it will get irritated, red, puffy and even pus will form if you don’t get it all out.  Not a pleasant thing if it were to happen to a bunny.

Here is a good web site for information on woods:

Hey I read the link and it said that oak is bad, do you know if most dowels are made out of oak or maple? She has some dowels in her cage that I don’t know what wood they are. I know they are a hardwood.
