Red spot on bunny’s ear?

Hi! I recently got a pet bunny (named him Lucah, 3 month old Holland Lop) from a licensed breeder. I’ve only had him for about a week and a half now. A day later after I got him, I was petting his head and I felt some type of scab on the top of his head close to his left ear. I didn’t really think about it much since I didn’t see him itch it constantly and I thought maybe it was a healing bite wound considering he was around other bunnies. A few days later I took a closer look and saw that the scab was slowly disappearing, but that was when the itching started. There seems to be some hair loss, irritation, and dandruff (?) as well. I gave him ivermectin orally yesterday and put miconazole on the area earlier today. Any idea on what it is and advice on what I can do?

This was taken an hour ago. I put miconazole on the affected area. I’ve been seeing him itch it more since then.

Sometimes a healing sore itches more when its about to heal. There is also the possibility of a fungal infection, as you’ve figured out yourself.

If this goes on and gets worse and  miconazole doesn’t help, you might suspect fur mites. (Fur mites don’t typically cause red skin though).

Fur mites is best treated with Revolution or Ivermectin. (While we’re on the subject of anti parasitics, I just want to add the warning we always issue: Never use any compound containing fipronil on a rabbit. Fipronil is the active substance in many antiparasitics such as Frontline, Sentry and Effipro. It’s fine for cats and dogs, but lethally toxic to rabbits. End of warning!)

In most countries, you need a vet to prescribe Revolution (selamectin) or ivermectin.
