hi we were just sitting and petting cinnabun today when we noticed that she has red scratches inside her ears.

we are pretty sure it’s not the mites as she doesn’t seem to have any build-up, but it does look like the inside of her ear has dry skin around the edges (little brown dots?)

so we were wondering if there are any great tips to alleviate her scratching or to lessen the dry skin?
should we just trim her nails and file them down so they are not as rough? (though i’m not sure how we would do that..  :X  help please~

You may be seeing the a result of mites.  I know you said you don’t think so because you don’t see that crusty build up stuff, but just keep in mind that that build up happens over time.   Your vet can determine for sure if it’s mites which is treatable via your vet.  Do you already have a rabbit savvy vet? If not we can help you find one if you’d like.

For me, I found a scratch on Ruperts ear. I assumed he’d cut it with his nails scracthing it.

I flipped him over and filed down all his nails so there would be no sharp edges and put polysporin on the ear each night until it went away. It healed asap and there isn’t even a mark there. That *could* be what happened with your bunny?

we do have a vet already, but we are not able to see her at this point ’cause both of us are bogged down with school work.
i’m scared that it could be mites, but suspect that she’s scratching her ear with sharp nails like Rupert did..

maybe i’ll try the ointment trick and try to file her nails (oh boy.. i dont’ even know how to start!) and see if the scars go away
would neosporin be safe to use on inside of bunny ears?

Yup neosporin and polysporin are both safe to use, just not the ‘plus’ kind (it has a pain reliever in it that’s not ok) but the triple antibiotics is totally safe

If there was ONE scratch I might think it could be an accidental self-inflicted ouchie- but more than one scratch makes me think there is something else going on.  The first scratch had to be painful so there must be a reason that they bunny is scratching her ears and causing more than 1 scratch wound.

Early cases of ear mites are probably not going to be visible in the part of the ear that you can see into.  You would need an otoscope like the vet uses to see deep in the ear canal (where mites and infections start).
