Chester is an 8 week old lionhead that I recently adopted and I noticed a bump on his hind leg a few days ago. I attached a picture. Have any of you ever had a bunny with this? If so, what is caused by it and how should I treat it? Should I take him to the vet or will it heal naturally? Please let me know, I am new to the bunny world!

          Hi,
Congrats on adopting him! It is always recommended to take a new bunny to a exotic vet as soon as you get them to make sure they are good and healthy. The vet will tell you how to treat the red bump and tell you what is could be.

That looks like something we call sore hocks. Bunnies get them from improper flooring (like metal wire), or unclipped nails, etc. Basically bunny feet don’t have protective pads like other animals, so when too much improper pressure is applied on their “heels”, there’s swelling and redness.

I recommend keeping his nails trimmed, wiping the sore spot with a soft cloth dipped in diluted antiseptic or strong chamomile tea, and then rubbing in a dab of diaper rash cream like Sudafed.

And then always make sure bunbun has a soft surface on which to hop when footsies are tired: a fleece blankie or towel, or little rug etc.
