I have discovered that the best toy for giving Pepper and Dylan exercise and stimulus is a hollowed out piece of log with a hole at each end of it and one in the middle which has dried mashed carrot in the centre.  I get it from the local pet store.  They play for hours and hours to get the carrot out and it’s great for their teeth.  Once they have eaten all the carrot (which can take days and days to get to) I am then left with an empty log.  I wondered if anyone had any suggestions on what I could fill it with again?  How can I make another mixture that would dry in the log?

You could always jam some hay and treats in there!

Does the pet store sell refills?

You could try drying your own carrot puree:
              make carrot puree
set your oven at it’s lowest temp.
cover a sheet trey with parchment paper (it’s like wax paper without the wax, in the grocery stoer right next to the wax paper)
spread the carrot on the parchment
stick it in the oven till it dries out – could take from 4 to 6 hours to overnight???

Would it be possible to do as Sage Cat has suggested but actually put the pulp in the log and put the lot in the oven on LOW? Or would that be a crazy fire risk?! You could wrap the outside of log in aluminium foil to prevent it getting to hot etc.

i’d try hay. maybe get a special hay blend just for the log? i have a grass ball from this site that i stuff with hay every night and give them at pellet time. even tho they have hay (the same hay!) in their regular hay container, they’ll empty out the grass ball first before moving onto the rest. i think they do like the challenge. of course, with carrots, you need to be careful due to the high sugar content.

do you have any pics of this log or does the petstore have a website that has a pic of their products?

Yes I have a hay ball as well and the rabbits love it.  The baked carrot idea sounds like it’s worth trying, I’ll try to upload a pic now….

Do you have a dehydrator.  IF the slices are thin it would dry it right up I don’t know how many hours it takes.  I have one with a book. I do potato chips sometimes.  They come out ok if they are thin enuf.  One way to keep the taters from going bad.

Sometimes you can find dehydrators in  thrift stores.
