Recommended Rabbit Treats/Toys

 Hey,

What kind of treats do you guys use for your pet rabbits? Also toys?? I use toiel rolls, blocks, and cat ball as toys…

Please give me some types of treats and toys you guys recommend me getting for Buster.  

It would be nice if you guys can give me the price and where you get it at.

Some people get their buns untreated willow balls (2-3 dollars I think, at Walmart). My Nava doesn’t have much of an interest in hers, but I heard others love them. Cat treat ball toys (7 dollars at Petco) are also fun for bunnies. Nava is learning how to use hers. Haha. She also has a giant jingle ball (4 dollars at a hardware store that had a pet section) that is made out of thick plastic she loves to push around. A hemp carrot toy from petco (not sure on price), buns love to toss them. Stuff animals (any size, just make sure he isn’t eating or chewing on them). That’s all I can think of right now… Oh and bunnies like to chase dangly cat toys too, I found that out (Thanks to Tipsy’s hooman). Haha.

For treats I’d stay away from dairy products, they make a lot of yogurt based rabbit treats that aren’t good for them (in fact, most rabbit treats are really bad for buns). There are recipes online to make your own, and they are pretty simple and straight forward. Also, craisins, and raisins are good, but Nava loves dried blue berries the most. For treats I tend to use fruits rather then store bought treats.

For treats my bunnies love papia, raisins, and apples also you could check out this website for rabbit recipes http://amazingdwarfs.blogspot.com/ As for toys my bunnies love cardboard boxes, paper bags stuffed with goodies, willow balls, and also I really recammend getting something from the Binky Bunny store my bunnies favorite is the wreath. I mostly use pellets as treats – my rabbits don’t get much in their daily diet, so they are happy to accept individual pellets as treats. For a really special treat I use craisins (broken up into little pieces) or other dried fruit (papaya is a favorite).

Mine don’t play with toys other than cardboard boxes, so I just make sure to have plenty of those around.

For toys my buns like willow balls (I got two large ones two days ago and they are all gone already lol), cardboard anything, tunnels, anything they can chew to pieces…

For treats I use craisins, carrots, broccoli … things they shouldn’t have much of, but are healthy and they love. Be careful with broccoli though, as it can cause gas in some buns.

No, no dairy (meaning yogurt too). I’d stick with what people suggested above, fruits, craisns, raisins, ect.

Most typical pet store toys and treats for bunnies are not ideal for bunnies because the treats either have too much sugar or other ingredients like seeds, etc. And most toys are colorful and look appealing to the owners- but the bunnies tend to ignore them. By far the best luck I have had is with toys from House Rabbit type places like Binky Bunny, Save A Bunny, etc. Even if you can’t order, or can’t order now- I would recommend looking on their website and seeing what they offer. They are typically only going to offer toys that appeal to a wide range of bunny personalities, and treats that have some sugar (as with dried fruits) but treats that are more natural.

Baby bunnies nurse from their mothers- but once they are weaned- dairy is NOT natural for a bunny to have in their diet as they are herbivores.

I go by a “if I wouldnt eat it, bunny shouldn’t either” when it comes to treats, and I stick to slivers of apple or banana, or bits of craisin. Recently I’ve started treating with sprigs of greens, like curly parsley or dill or mint, that way I don’t really have to limit nearly as much, and they still love it because they get it at a time thats different (they usually get their greens at night).

Some of those pet store treats have really toxic stuff in them, I read one ingredient the other day that causes cancer and death, basically. Menadione, I believe. Its never been tested on animals but has been banned from human consumption. Bottom line is most companies really don’t care about your pet.

My rabbits really like their papaya tablets, craisins, raisins, papaya, apple, carrot, banana, mango, and these parsley flavored hay treats. Oh also dried flowers and things like lavender and chamomile (check to make sure they’re safe first). Just think natural and simple. All in small amounts. Anything with dairy or human food like crackers, cake, bread, pasta, cereal, ect. causes bacteria to build up and can kill them. I like Sam and Lady’s rule, except for I would never eat the hay treats or dried flowers lol

My rabbits love phone books, cardboard boxes, unpeeled willow baskets and toys, tunnels (the ones at the pet store sometimes sell fluff with them, just take the fluff out), stuffed animals, toilet paper rolls (only the cardboard part), blankets, and some of my old hard plastic baby toys. Actually they love pushing around this plastic ball with a duckie inside it that I loved a lot when I was little. I recommend anything from the BinkyBunny store because they’re not going to sell you something that’s dangerous for your bunny and my bunnies have loved everything so far (maze haven and cottontail cottage are awesome).

My bunnies love herbs, roses, fruits like persimmon and apple, and carrots as treats.
They have a lot of cardboard boxes I get from costco but they don’t really destroy it, also ignored paper bags unless their are treats inside, paper tubes, a phone book in the living room even though they don’t dig in it, stuffed animals, squishy balls to roll around, and baby toys that can be thrown.

My bunnies don’t really play with their paper tubes or paper bags unless there are snacks inside. They don’t like playing with toys so time outside their cage is the most entertaining part of their day!

OKAY!! THANKS A LOT! YOU PEOPLE ARE VERY HELPFUL! After Buster finish his yogurt I will not buy it any more! (or should I just throw it away) So for now on I will only buy fruits and veggies treats for him…

You can give the yogurt treats to the neighborhood racoons, possums, or squirrels.
Don’t throw them away, please.
I believe throwing away any food is awful and shouldn’t be done.

It would be better to throw the treats out than to to feed them to your bunny. Yogurt can KILL your rabbit. Please don’t feed him anymore!!!

Eh, instead of throwing them out why not give them to a friend with small pets, or give them away? Rats go CRAZY for yogurt type treats. I also believe throwing food out is a waste.

If it is a food that is bad for them, I have no issue throwing it out. they aren’t good for any animal really. Not with the preservatives and who knows what else is put into pet treats.

I’m pretty sure those yogurt things aren’t good for rats either? I used to give them to my hamster and now I’m pretty sure thats what killed him :/

I don’t know that I would consider yogurt treats food really. I would toss them and just forget about it :~)

My rabbits like craisins and dried papaya and dried pineapple. Also most of the Oxbow and American Pet Diner treats.

yogurt is ok for rats, and is not ok for hamsters. Definitely not ok for rabbits. Rabbits have an overlarged cecum much like a horses and their gut flora is kept nice and healthy by eating hay, not by eating probiotics (yogurt) like us people. But if you are feeding those yogurt drops, I would suggest throwing them out. Those contain so much sugar that even a rat would not be able to handle it very well. They are not very good treats. They just have pretty packaging and say they are great for every small animal, so people buy them.
I feed my rabbit the occasional apple bit. I slice my apple in 4ths then I take the 4th and slice that in halves. I only give her one every other day. I give her cilantro, parsley, romaine lettuce, and spinach, but spinach only in little bits. She is very picky on her sweets. I think she likes pears, but I am not certain, she looked like she didnt like it, but then it was gone after 10 minutes.

They are fine for rats, rats can eat pretty much anything we can (the list of things they can’t it is rather short). Obviously they are very fattening though, so it is a treat you give them once in a while.

Even if the food is bad for rabbits, I don’t like the idea of throwing them out when another type of pet can eat them. It is a waste of money and foods.
