Recommended Rabbit Feed

Hi, I’m new here but I have been reading up on what I should and should not be feeding my rabbit.

I understand that a good rabbit feed should not have colored chunks or pieces in it and it should all be green pellets.

I also remember reading somewhere about certain brands that are not good for rabbits. 

However, I can’t remember which website did I found those information, so I was hoping that I could get some information here regarding good rabbit food brands and those that are not as recommended.

That’s correct. A plain pellet is better. It’s a balanced feed and doesnt allow the animal to select out some bits they like, leaving the rest.
However, pellets are a small portion of the diet. The biggest and best part of the diet is hay.

I think House Rabbit Society site has a list of pellets. Perhaps you read it there? Im not certain how up to date the recommendations are though.

In brief, look for pellets that the first ingredient is hay or hay meal. Check the fibre percentage is at least over 18%. The higher, the better. Protein should be around 14-16% I think and not higher then the fibre content. Fat content no greater then 3%.

In my opinion, the best quality pellet is Oxbow. I feed Oxbow Timothy pellets to my buns. I used to feed Martin’s pellets until one day I opened a bag that was green with mold!!!! I immediately switched to Oxbow. It tends to be a bit more pricey but is worth it. You want a feed that is strictly quality controlled (like Oxbow) because mold spores are really bad and can lead to very sick bunnies. You also don’t want to feed pellets that are dusty. Most pellets tend to be a brownish/green colour.

I myself am also new to the board … I have a very young bunny and have been told by the pet shop to feed her “Wild Sanko Rabbit Plus Pellets for Young Rabbit” and when she is over 8 months to use “Wild Sanko Rabbit Plus Diet Maintenance”

Murasaki, those pellets sound like good pellets – I’m not familiar with them since they aren’t sold in the US but I wouldn’t hesitate to use them.
