Recommend your water bottle

I was hoping someone might recommend a good water bottle.  I have a plastic one made by Lixit, and it leaks a bit and is a little larger than we really need for our one bun Oreo (32 oz), although she has no trouble using it. 

We tried a second one that was smaller and made of glass http://www.petsmart.com/product/ind…Id=2753343  … the problem with this one was that it leaked pretty badly and also didn’t seem to give Oreo as much water as she was looking for.  She’d pull at it and turn it to get more from it I think. 

So we tried one more time buying another Lixit bottle (thinking that brand would work well) but just smaller this time (16 oz).  We put that one in last night and needless to say, she hated it and didn’t drink much from it.  So we’re back to our original 32oz bottle again (since she likes this one best and will drink from it) but we’re hoping to get a good bottle that doesn’t leak as much and isn’t quite as big.  I know crocks might be preferred by some, but I know that she doesn’t have trouble drinking from the bottle (it’s all she’s known since even before we got her)..and I like knowing that it’s not going to get knocked over or anything so she’ll always have what she needs.

If anyone has any to suggest I’d love to hear it!  I am sure there is no perfect water bottle…but the one we have now keeps making a mess in the cage…luckily she spends most of her time out of the cage in her xpen.  Thanks in advance!

I have three of those glass water bottles and they work just fine. Hubble is my big water drinker, and he LOVES his glass bottle. He actually has two, one plastic back up, and one glass, and he always drinks from the glass one first. With most bottles there will be a few drips, but nothing big (except I hate this one I got from Walmart…). Are you sure that you are getting the vacuum seal done properly? You might already know this, but I’ll say it just in case you don’t; the reason the bottle needs to be filled to the top is so a vacuum is created to keep the water in.

That reminds me, they have those water things for dogs that have a big reserve of water on the back, but the front is a bowl. I think some other members use those. I loath using them for big dogs, but the ones for cats/rabbits are so small they are easy to use and clean on a regular basis.

My buns have a bowl – the kind in a frame. After 2 years they have yet to nock it over.

My opnion is bowls are much cleaner than bottles. but I know a lo o people here use bottles.

Yes I prefer bowls-well no wait…my bunnies all prefer bowls. They likely want to look more sophisticated then gerbils or guinea pigs, and cooler more like cats and dogs-so they do the bowl thing

Little-Bit prefers bowls and Binkles preferred bowls too. I find that they drink lots more water with bowls and I think they enjoy it too.

I use glass water bottles as well, and they will drink out of them first before the plastic bottle. Now I’m tempted to taste water out of both and see what the difference is lol.

Maybe it’s like the coke thing? It tastes so much better out of the bottle than the can? lol

You know what I think is funny? Eclipse can drink out of the dog bowl, but she never does. She has accidentally put a foot in it, but she will never drink from it.

Thanks everyone for your input. I’ll have to see how the leaking goes and if it doesn’t get better I’ll have to get a bowl too. She drinks a lot from the bottle and that’s the important thing. I just didn’t care for the mess it made…

Oh and KytKattin, yes I’m aware of the vacuum seal with the bottle. Thanks though!

None of our rabbits have responded well to water bowls.  They seem to prefer the bottles.  The best bottle I’ve found is plastic.  I think it is Lixit, but it’s a huge jumbo size.  I haven’t had much of a leaking issue & well it stays full very long b/c it’s so big!  My cats are super spoiled w/ a drinkmate fountain.  One of the cats refuses to drink bowl water, only fountain water.  He also drinks by submersing his paw in the water and liking it off…….LOL!  We call it his PEE PAW!

Skunklionshow – I think that’s probably the same bottle we have (well one of them) and it’s huge as well.. She doesn’t drink that much compared to the size of the bottle so we end up pouring most of it out… (We change the bottle daily). And when we tried the smaller bottle it wasn’t as good and she seemed to struggle and pull at it.

Last night I gave her a bowl and she was fine drinking from it..but I’m going to leave the bottle up too, just in case something gets in her water (like the single poop pellet she decided to drop in it….she has an obsession with marking EVERYTHING) or if it spills or something. I’m paranoid since we’re gone so long all day long, I don’t want her to be without water.

I just got a new bottle for my rabbits. Finally a glass one I wanted for a while.  I also have a bowl but with 4 rabbits drinking from it that bowl gets dirty very quickly.

I use the water buddy, it does not leak because it does not use the vacuum technique, it uses a little lever- or something like that. I would use a bowl but, Fern likes to dig the water so by the end of the day I come home to find an empty bowl, a wet floor and two thirsty buns. Thistle did well with a bowl but Fern is a digger, she digs her pellets and hay too and seems to like putting her two front feet in her food and water before she eats/drinks it.
