Recently neutered

Today was a big day for us, Sully went to get neutered. Things went very smoothly and the vet staff was super nice. We’ve been keeping an eye on him, he’s eating, drinking, pooping, etc, all just like normal. He’s a little groggy still but active when we are with him. I’ll probably have a few more questions during the healing process but here’s two quickies:    

1. He’s not too fond of us touching his private area normally so now that he’s had surgery there, he really doesn’t want us too. I’ve not been able to actually check the incisions since we were at the vet’s. Any suggestions to make this easier? It’s really important that we check on things periodically, but so far, it’s not happening.
2. We were told to keep him in his box and limit exercise for 7 days. That just seems so long to us, especially since he’s had open range of the house since the day he was brought home. Of course we’re going to follow our vet’s orders. But we thought we’d see what other peoples’ experiences.

that’s fantastic that you had Sully neutered, hope he’ll be feeling much better soon. males seem to recover much more quickly than females. He’s likely to be sore for several days though. the biggest thing to pay attention to – is he eating? if he’s not then you know he’s in pain, so call the vet. You may try to entice him with especially yummy veggies like dill, basil or radish tops if he’s not enthusiastic about food.

Inspect the incision morning and evening. After a neuter, the scrotum may swell with fluids. Warm compresses will help, but it is nothing to be overly concerned about. With any sign of infection, take the rabbit to the veterinarian immediately. You don’t need to touch the incisions, but should be able to tell if there’s a problem by sight.

I would play it by ear to see how long to confine him, he may not need the full 7 days, but it’s better to err on the side of caution.

i would try to inspect my bunnies incisions when he was licking his chest. so he would be sitting up a bit. Also, my boy was totally fine two days after the surgery. I couldn’t keep him confined. If he was caged up he would be running around and pulling at the x pen. So I presonally felt might as well let him out so he would be happy lying on the other side of the room. which is what he did.

The reason that the vets say 7 days is to prevent any damage to sutures when they are jumping up and down on things. I know when I had my first bunny neutered, he was itchin to have more freedom after three days. I called the vet to say he was feeling great, but the vet said there is still a possibility for the closure to be reopened with too much exercise too soon, especially when jumping up and down on things.

I ended up using an xpen to keep him confined but allow for some low-key exercise.
