Most of you probably know about Mr. Bunny’s problem with bald spots. He still has them, and they’re still all over his body. We’re trying some new medicines for him now, which I’ll post about later.

Anyway, today I was doing my daily examining of his bald spots. I was looking at his newest (and largest) bald spot on his forehead. I noticed that he had a few places where hair was growing back just a little. In each of those places was a bright red, almost scab-like looking roundish rash. Now here’s the odd part…in each place (of which there were 3) there was a little soft lump under the skin where the rash was. The largest one was about the size of half a large pea. The other ones were smaller, but still easy to feel. I examined all his other bald spots and it seems he only has these on his forehead. They don’t seem to be attached to the bone or anything – they moved along with the skin.

What do you think is causing this?  He’s never had this before. Do you think I should be worried?

What things has your vet tested him for? The subcutaneous lumps you are describing, combined with the rash, make me almost think of rabbitpox. It is a virus affecting mostly laboratory rabbits though. Where did you get Mr Bunny?

I got Mr. Bunny from a shelter over a year ago. Before that, he was a hutch rabbit.

I still believe it is a parasite, a burrowing mite possibly. Even if a skin scraping came back negative it is possible Mr Bunny has a type of mange mite. The irritation could cause a swelling in the burrow site in his skin. What exactly did the vet say? I will PM you, to send you a PDF.
