Hi there!  This is Pepita.  She’s my best bun!

She has been doing her seasonal molt thing (we live in Virginia US) but this morning as we were having a bit of apple for breakfast treats I noticed a weird undercoat patch.

Upon further inspection I found a bald spot on her left hip.  No dander so I’m assuming not mites.  Not scabby or wet or oozing anything unidentifiable.  She acts like it’s not even there.  It does seem a little swollen/puffy around the edges of where her undercoat of white comes back in.

She’s had no diet change.  We’ve not changed fabric detergents for her bedding. She is free roam during the day with supervision while I’m working and while in a multi-pet household, no other animals have access to her.

She is only 3 years old and a Flemish Giant but has been spayed and is under vet care for checkups etc and has always had a clean bill of health.

The first appointment I was able to grab for her isn’t until Monday.  Anyone had anything similar with their buns?

She’s a laid back gal and doesn’t get into much that isn’t a bunny toy.  She never had interest in the spicy hay (lol) and other than trying to occasionally burrow through my carpet – she’s a cuddle bun.

It generally looks pretty normal to me. I don’t see anything unusual. I actually don’t see any bare skin in the photos? That being said some rabbits, like one of mine, will often molt in areas where the fur hasn’t actually grown in yet, so bare spots are around during this time of year. The fact that you’re seeing healthy skin rather than flaky, crusty, or irritated skin is a good sign.

The slight puffiness as you mention may just be a texture result from fur growing in. I’d keep monitoring it but it doesn’t seem too urgent in my opinion

It doesn’t seem too urgent in her opinion either since everything else seems normal.

I’m going to let her vet eyeball it Monday but just wanted to make sure the hive mind didn’t see something I wasn’t 😛

Hay, it looks pretty normal to me! I’ve had this experience with my bun before, and I was a little freaked out, but I found out that it was normal soon enough. Sometimes bald spots can appear when buns are molting, so I wouldn’t be too concerned. Pepita is absolutely beautiful, by the way! She reminds me a lot of my previous ginger bun, Nutmeg
