I recently obtained a 3 year old Female lop ear rabbit that hasn’t been fixed. She came with her original cage and had been litter box trained, I guess the previous owner who raised her said she was a 4-h bunny. Anyways, She’s been super great, really affectionate and friendly. The only strange thing is when I spend a lot of time with her in the living room (the room where she has free range) she tends to have lots of acciedents. But when I’m at school or in my room studying or something, I never find that she’s had any accidents, its only when I’m down stairs with her. Currently, I only close her cage at night, but I was hoping to get to the point where I could just leave her cage open 24-7 and not have to worry about her not using her litter box. I’ve had her for about 2 weeks now, any suggestions or thoughts on why this might be happening?

        Jason

It is harder to train bunnies that aren’t spayed/neutered. The fact she is a new place will make her want to “mark” her new territory especially if you’re around. This is normal even with rabbits who are altered, but it can be even more so with bunnies that aren’t.

Are you planning on getting her spayed? Female rabbits have a high rate of cancer of their reproductive organs, so even if you get her back to being litter trained as her original owner claimed, it still would benefit her.

Welcome here! I ditto BinkyBunny! A lot of it is going to be marking the new place. It’s great that you want her to be free-range, but this might not be possible until she is better littertrained and spayed. You can get an xpen and attach that to her cage, so she has some space to exercise but is not using the bathroom everywhere. What might be happening is that when you get home, she sees you as invading HER territory (the entire living room) and feels she has to mark it to reclaim as her own. There is info about littertraining on this site under “Bunny Info”.
