        Hey all,

I’m familiar with cecotropes and their function. However, I was wondering if anyone might know how rabbits know which are cecotropes versus their other poops.

Im actually not really sure, but I dont think it matters to them. I have seen my rabbit eat both their cecotropes and their regular poops, but mostly their cecotropes. They seems to eat both to get all the nutrients they need

The cecotropes tend to be softer and you don’t normally see your bunny eating them. I don’t know if it is just my bunny but her cecotropes smell like coffee?

Cecotropes come from an “outlet” later in the intestine, so I suspect they can feel that the caecum is expelling something and to “get ready”.

Both of my rabbits hop in circles with their heads down so they appear to know something is coming!

Haha! That’s amazing about the possibility they can “feel” it coming. We never see the cecotropes when Frankie is eating them but Junie always spits one out. Like a golden retriever with too many tennis balls.

Not too mention they are quite smelly. I am sure they differentiate between them and other poops because of that as well

I was going to agree I suspect its to do with the smell or scent! Which is pretty gross ?

My bun seem’s too know when her’s are coming, she has them once a day but at least once a week it is stuck all in her hair on her fuzzy little butt. I have too clean her with baby wipes and that just makes her really angry at me for about 2 hours, she’s a sassy little diva. and yes they have a strong odor so I think that’s how they know. they also look like a blackberry.
