I heard on the news that across the river at my Dr’s office nearby  a coon was captured that had rabies.  So I have been much more careful about taking Cotton outdoors.

You just don’t know.  Few years ago a coon in the neighboring town had rabies.

        Yikes.

Yes they can. Humans can also get rabies from a rabbit if it is infected, and/or from other rabid animals.

Ooohpf  rabies is scary.    A lady was walking a dog in the park here and her dog bit a child.  NO one knew who she was or who owned the dog.  If it had shots or not.

the poor child had to take rabies shots in his stomache and it hurts.  Such a shame.  Poor boy.

NO I dont’ want rabit anythign near me or my buns either.

^^luckily the rabies vaccine now is one single shot.. not in the stomach.. just like a regular vaccine!!

also.. i read that is it rare for rabbits to contract rabies even if bitten by a rabbid animal because of their genetics.. however they CAN become infected.

Lilybear, that is true from what I have heard as well and they do not carry the rabies virus.  So if you are bitten by a rabbit, chances are they do not have rabies and could not survive an encounter from an animal affected by it.

Here is a bit more info that I happen to have on hand:

Rabies in rodents and lagomorphs is rather rare opposed to rabies in carnivores like raccoons. It is also virtually impossible to contract rabies if bitten by mice, rats, squirrels, chipmunks, rabbits, etc because they have hardly any saliva, if none at all - rabies is passed on from human to animal via infected saliva. Also, rabies quickly kills rodents, which lessens the chance of one encountering a rabid critter. I was bitten by a squirrel two years ago in my front yard attempting a rescue…all I needed was a tetinus shot. After doing extensive research on rabies I learned thee above.

Raccoons, bats and coyotes are the top 3 rabies carriers. ICK.
