Here is a bizarre question. I just adopted my first rabbit and am already loving the slide towards crazy-rabbit-lady-dom. Now my other big hobby for the last few years has been perfume. Any fellow perfume enthusiasts here?

Q: is there any risk to wearing perfume around my rabbit? So far I have not noticed any behavior changes when I have applied a scent, he is equally eager to be pet and be close to me as just before I put it on.

I have an extensive collection that includes both all natural scents and ones with synthetic ingredients. Even if people don’t wear perfume near their rabbits, does anyone make use of essential oils or a lot of aromatherapy around the house? How do your rabbits respond to that?

My fear is that I am slowly introducing toxicity into his system in a way that will not have any immediate effect but might do long term damage.

It’s fine if you wear it around them, but never spray it near them. Spray it somewhere your bun doesn’t go and do it with the door shut. Buns have sensitive respiratory systems, so you need to be careful about that.

I wear a spritz of Body Shop’s English Rose every day. My buns never seem bothered by it. I always spray it towards the back of my neck so when I pick them up, they won’t end up smelling like it. But I never use any aromatherapy, scented candles or anything in my house because I’ve read that can be bad for the buns. Some essential oils can be very toxic to animals.

Here is a short but interesting post I just found on essential oils around rabbits, lits a few no’s and a few yes’s: https://www.facebook.com/notes/essential-oil-vet-janet-roark-dvm/essential-oils-and-rabbits-and-other-hind-gut-fermeters/2347212432170916/

Hmm good to know! I usually do a good job of applying in my bedroom with the door closed but will be sure to remain vigilant about when/where I apply
