Rabbits and Fleas…HELP ME!!!!

ok i have my 2 rescued buns Stu and Onyx, who really like me now, but anyway, i had adopted a young male siamease kitten from a friend of mine cause they couldnt handle him, they are an entire breed of their own and takes a special person to own one…anyone else that has them knows what i am talking about but anyway, they were very open to tell me, thank goodness, that he has a mild case of fleas.

so, i have had him for 2 days and he is quite skinny, i know my friend was feeding him, both of his cats were on free range food and this little boy ate like a growing boy does but he is still abmnormally skinny so i looked him over for flea dirt (flea poop) and he was covered in it. my understanding is the more dirt the more fleas. so i gave him a flea bath and OMG  he was beyond infested. the water came reddish brown from all the blood from them biting him. now he has been bathed and is going to be givin a drop treatment.

ok, so my point to all this is, im worried of my buns getting the fleas and would it be safe to give them the drop treatment that is for cats? i know you cant give dog treatment to cats so i am just wondering if this goes for cat treatment? please let me know.

Can you tell me what the drop treatment is.

I believe it is frontline that will kill a rabbit.   Check with your vet and get the flea oil drops you stick on the back of their necks that should help

A vet would be a good idea for the buns cuz of their weight.    Usually the kitten size is used for buns

The only rid-flea product cleared for rabbits is Advantage for kittens.

You can also use Revolution as well.

I find it ironic that there are so few products indicated for use on pet rabbits when most medications are tested on lab bunnies.

I got a small supply of Advantage for kittens, and you don’t use a full dose on bunnies, but that won’t harm them.

Be careful when it comes to household products you may be tempted to try, like the carpet cleaners. The bunnies are close to the floor in a way the cat would not be, so they are potentially harmful.

i have revolution but it is the teal for large dogs. if doesed properally, my best freind is a vet tech, would this be safe for them?

No kidding hey? Most of the meds you use for bunnies are off label (meaning for other animals or indications…)

I am not demeaning your friend who is probably a wonderful vet tech-but I would NOT give this med unless and until a vet prescribes it-with the dosing info

I would ask the vet to dose this – it’s really just a matter of dosage for Revolution so I think that if you ask the vet and get the proper dosage you are fine.

This is just it, you cannot dose it properly. I am surprised if any veterinary staff would sign off on that. Never ever use a product that is measured for a specific weight range on a much smaller animal — you won’t get the dose right. The teal revolution is for dogs weighing between 40 and 85 lbs. The dosage tubes are tiny. It would be hard to measure the contents correctly, and you would be wasting an expensive drug, too, as you have to discard of the remainder. Also, once you use some from the tube your dosage for your dog will be off. Your vet tech friend should be able to get you the kitten Advantage easily.

The flea medication is made with a higher concentration of ‘active ingredients’ for larger dogs so changing the dosage (from say 4 drops to 1) will not vary that concentration amount – which is what will harm the rabbit. You do need to get the kitten brand.

You may also want to take a stool sample of your cat into the vet and have it checked for worms. It is possible that it has a parasite (like a tapeworm) that is causing the skinny issues – which could also be transmitted to rabbits if they come across a contaminated litter pan/area.

i know the kitten has tapeworm but i am not concerned about the buns getting it from the cat cause the litter pans for the cats are kept in a completely different part of the house where the buns are not allowed.

i also have cat and kitten drop treatment made by hartz. would this be okay to use on the buns?

I would not use any Hartz product on a rabbit or a cat that could be anywhere NEAR a rabbit.  You need to use Advantage for Revolution for all the pets under vet supervision for dosing.  A vet will not really even be able to adive you much on the Hartz product as they are generally unfamiliar with the cheaper ineffective treatments.

Please DON’T use any Hartz product on your pet. Hartz is under fire for their flea and tick products killing innocent pets. I’m surprised their stuff is still on store shelves. Of course, Hartz denies any wrongdoing.

i bought it to use it on the cats but in the end decided trying a new product on my 2 cats and they are doing great. i am quite pleased with it and think this is going to be my new one.

I recommend to use 1 product only  on ALL your pets (cats, dogs, if you have any, and rabbits) in the indicated dosage tubes. The problem with using multiple products on pets of the same household is that different flea products can become very dangerous when present in combination, especially the Hartz products, which have not even been cleared for use on rabbits.
