Rabbits and Cats

So, what is everyone’s thoughts on bonding rabbits and cats. Not sure how this predator/prey relationship will work out. Nova (cat) was just a kitten when I found her on my porch and introduced her to Felony (the bunz). Felony was almost two years and had been living all that time as an only child in my apartment. They got along just fine, but my roommate decided she hated cats and I had my mom adopt Nova until my roommate moved out.

So the roommate is out, and Nova has been living the luxurious life of an only kitty with her grandma and grandpa. She is also much bigger than she was a few months ago. I’m thinking of going home to get my cat back soon. Any advice for getting them back to being friends?

I have heard several instances of cats and rabbits getting along very well. I do know that you need to introduce them very slowly, and make sure they are closely supervised for quite awhile. The first time I introduced a cat and rabbits, the rabbits were very frightened at the way that the cat moved – it was kind of a “stalking” manner, so watch the way that your cat acts around your bunny. You probably should start by introducing with felony being in some type of pen with a box or condo or something that he can hide in to feel safe. Once they are getting along, still be careful because rabbits have very sensitive skin that can very easily be scratched by a cat playing or swatting at a bunny. You’ll probably also want to check felony over every once in awhile just in case a scratch has occurred so that you can be sure that an abcess doesn’t develop.

It was actually recommended that Maryann get a cat for bonding purposes. They figured she was too bossy of a bun to have another bun friend. I just didn’t want to have a cat as a pet. So, yes, buns and cats can make good friends.

My two cats and Tucker are good friends.  One of them I don’t have to worry about with Tucker, he’s very mellow and doesn’t ever swat at Tucker, the other one is my diva cat and sometimes she gets in a mood where she’ll swat at Tucker when she’s in her way.  I always just make her leave the area when she’s being like that and she’ll go back later when she’s in a better mood. 

I think alot depends on the rabbit and the cat really.  Tucker doesn’t attack the cats but I think if she did that they might try to swat her more.  And my cats are pretty mellow and aren’t that active or crazy so they don’t seem to think of Tucker as prey.  I think they just think she’s a silent cat with big ears and a short tail.
