A while back i lost my King Parrot to PFBD (Basically Bird Aids) I have really really really wanted another one but finding a Hand Raised King is near impossible.  Then today i found out that there is a lady at the other end of the country that has some and it will be ready around my Birthday.  i was really excited but then i started to worry.  I mean i have my two bunnies and the King would have to be kept in the same room as them or at the very least have out of the cage time in the same room as them.  i was wondering if anyone knew of any health issues that this could cause to either of them?  I was thinking that I could move the bunnies to my room and let them free range but my sister is moving out and not taking her dogs with her and they sleep on my bed at the moment so I would feel bad kicking them off after 6 years of doing it (and yes they are HER dogs they ignore me unless they want to sleep).  I know that Rabbit poop is not good for birds to ingest but I vacum every night and the King would not be in the same cage as them so yeah any ideas?

I know other members have birds and buns in the same area without a problem. One thing that is an issue to bunnies, is that ingesting seeds from bird feed can cause impaction problems in the gut. But as you say, you vaccuum every night, so I don’t think that would be too big of a problem. In terms of actual illness, I am not familiar with anything that can be passed right off the top of my head.

Thanks Beka my Kings never get alot of seed as it high in fact and can cause issues so they get alot of fruit and veggies all of which I can feed to the rabbit so if I miss something in the vacum then I should be fine. Not sure I am ready to take the next step and get another one but want to make sure that if something comes up I could take them.

When my bunnies are out they are around/under Kirby’s cage (Red Bellied Parrot) but the dogs have access too and clean up any pellets, seed ets that the bunnies get little to no “crumbs” from the parrot.

The other parrots (some that are paired) are in another room- and I don’t let the bunnies in there.  Schroeder got in there once and I had a hard time herding him out of there- he was in heaven with all the things the messy Timneh Greys and Senegals drop.  So I close the door to that room when the bunnies are out now.

If you can clean up what the bird drops and keep the bird from dropping stuff that would be too much for the bunnies to eat when they are out- it should be fine.

I am in the US and I can’t think of any major health risks- maybe coccidia?  but not sure pet birds get the same type that bunnies can get.

You could always call your exotics vet and ask.

I think Coccidia is the only concern-it can be in dogs, cats, birds, rabbits etc.

Calling the exotic vet is a great idea

I’m not seeing any websites with common health problems in that species so I’m not sure?
These are just common in all pet birds http://www.parrotparrot.com/library/

You can also check by googling what affects king parrots (you may already know what they are prone to or can carry ) then asking us or googling what affects rabbits.

The Big one is PBFD however rabbits can’t get that as they do not have feathers or beaks. I have heard alot of rabbit to bird issues but not bird to rabbit. I will talk to my rabbit vet and also my bird vet and see what they say.

My vet is an exotics (only) vet, who specializes in and owns birds. She is very good with bunnies, too.

She may be able to answer a few basic questions via email. Here’s her website address: www dot birdexoticvet dot com

This actually has sparked a question for you bird owners. I am curious – How do bunnies react to the sound of birds – especially the louder vocal chords of parrots. I mean, I know my bunnies will react to some louder bird sounds outside, and of course if the birds were in their bunny rooms, the bunnies would be spooked, but that’s because they are not used to it. Do your bunnies get used to bird talk?

I have two Budgie on the other side of the door way who are very vocal, then Blue starts screaming Bugz goes up to the door and grunts and bangs he head on it. Neither seem to have an issue. i also have VERY vocal birds outside that you can hear in the study and this does not seem to bother them.
