So my rabbit is an outdoor rabbit so his hutch door gets opened at 7AM and then he gets locked away at like 8PM/9PM depending on how dark it is/when people get in from work. In that time he is always out on the grass eating it throughout the day, or in and out of the bushes chomping on them, or he even takes to trying to eat some of the wooden decking. He gets some pellets at night too, and depwnding on what we have some apple, pear, or veggies as well. But he never eats his hay, not once since I got him years ago. He always gets fresh hay every day and the hurch gets cleaned out regularly but he never eats it. I even tried outting little bits in with his food to encourage it but he nwver touched it really. Is this a bad thing? Or is he just not so bothered about wating the hay because of all the grass and leaves he can munch on through the day? Is it alrigt if he doesnt have hay when he can access all that too?

If he is eatin grass, it’s the wet version of hay, he should be good. As long as it isn’t treated with any pesticides and that no other animal can get into that area and poop as that is an easy way for parasites to get in him. Is he on flea control medicine like revolution? And ticks can’t get into his place through the cage right?

Any fruits should be given in moderation(1tbsp Max a day) veggies and hay should be given daily and minimal fruit. You can cut back on pellets as it can make them very full and see if he will eat hay because of that.

Have you tried different brands and kinds of hay?

If he eats lots of grass, he’ll be fine. Hay is grass, pretty much. I had a bunny that refused hay but happily ate lots of fresh grass (I know your bun is used to fresh grass, but for other people perhaps reading this: Fresh grass should be introduced slowly like any other green, if the bun has never had fresh grass before).

If, however, your bun only eats a little grass and fills up on leaves etc that finds outside, there sould be trouble down the line. Grass or hay (or both) is what keeps the teeth and the tummy in good order. Leaves and pellets and vegs and fruit don’t wear the teeth like hay and grass do. Teeth problems are common in rabbits, and they’re a nuisance both for the bun and the bun owner.

As Bunny House also says, you can try different hays and see if there’s a type your bun will accept. Buy small bags though so you don’t have to waste good hay and money =)

Have tried a couple of types and he has just never ate it. But then again, never had any problems with him and he’s always been healthy enough.

He gets a monthly anti-parasite spot on also.
