I live in Harrisonburg, VA  and currently have two house bunnies (Oz who is a Dutch about 6 years old, Izzy who is a lop about 7 years old) that I rescued from the SPCA five years ago.  They are litterboxed trained and very friendly (yet shy) bunnies.  Unfortunately, my two year old daughter is allergic to them (i.e. sneezing, watery eyes, hives, eczema etc.).  With that being said I am looking for a place or someone to donate them.  I didn’t want to take them back to the SPCA as I feel they don’t take as good of care as they should and I think our local SPCA is a kill shelter.  They are also bonded and I wanted to ensure they would be kept together.  I was wondering if anyone knew of any organization that take in bunnies or someone that might be interested?
Thanks and I look forward to hearing from you.

Hi sunset! Welcome to BB! We do not allow members to use the forum to rehome their bunnies, but we can certainly provide advice for how to go about doing it.

Random thought – Is your daughter for sure allergic to the bunnies? Sometimes it’s the hay. Have you done allergy testing? Tried different hay? I’m just asking because I would hate for you to rehome your beloved bunnies when you might not have to.

Definitely check to make sure if hay is the problem. I know of more than one person who thought they were allergic to their rabbit, and it turned out to be the hay. They were fine after changing their hay variety.

If it turns out to be the rabbits, you can try discussing this with your vet. Sometimes they may know of a family who can give a rabbit a good home. They do need to remain together since they are bonded, and especially since they are older.

Rescues are often full. Now, it’s been a couple of months since Easter, and rescues are more likely to be full if they are taking in Easter dumps. There may be one near you that could help, though. Here is a list of rescues by state. I know that this list isn’t completely up to date, some rescues may have closed, and others may have opened. There are 3 listed for Virginia.

I wouldn’t recommend listing your rabbits on Craig’s List or any similar places, as you are liable to get people responding who want the rabbits for reasons other than as companion animals.

I do hope it turns out to be a hay allergy, and that you can find different types and brands that won’t affect your daughter, so that you can keep your bunnies.

Bunny Lu Adoptions is probably your best bet as they, according to their website, have a location in Harrisonburg. When I was researching rabbit adoption last year, they were one of the people I considered, but decided on Friends of Rabbits because it had (and has) much cheaper adoption rates. Anyway, the Bunny Lu Adoptions site has instructions on how to contact them directly via phone or email on their “surrender” tab. But per @tobyluv, I’d research to see if your daughter is allergic to the hay your buns are being fed rather than the buns themselves. I’m having problems with allergies myself the past few weeks, but that’s mostly because it’s pollen season here in the DC area (and also there’s a lot of dust in the bottom of my hay bin that I need to throw out). Actually, you should check your hay storage to see if there are a lot of small pieces/dust; long pieces/strands generally don’t give as many problems.

Oh yes, please, DEFINITELY do elimination process to check it is not the HAY or STRAW. Mine have hay sticks (FIBAFIRST) as a treat, but they are made to replace hay completely.
So you see you may not have to have any hay or straw or any dust which may be the cause of your daughters reactions. Poor thing. Its no fun for anyone to suffer.
                Poor bunnies too…..

Yup, it could be the hay. Experimenting with different types may help solve the problem
