We’re planting a garden outside–for our rabbit–and we’re trying to figure out if we can’t have a tree there. I know fruit trees are supposed to be safe, but which ones, specifically? I’m not sure if we’ll have enough light for a fruit tree, either, so are there any others that would be totally safe for a rabbit (so that he or she would be able to gnaw on it, eat the leaves, and so on)?

Also, this the wrong forum for this? I’m not sure if this is really nutrition or just a general FAQ…

Welcome Eugenia! You came to the right place and posted perfectly right! What a bunch of lucky rabbits you are going to have. It sounds like you are quite thoroughly bunny-whipped, just like the rest of us!

As for your question, fruit trees with those fruits that have no pit are best. Pitted fruit trees (examples: peach, apricot, plum, nectarine, cherry) are toxic to a rabbit so stick with an apple or pear tree. You might also want to consider a weeping willow, they are bunny-safe, and my two adore them!

I wish I could find the thread we had going a while back on that, I got a lot of great suggestions from everyone. I decided on a weeping willow and an apple tree because the buns can chew them. And my buns loved the bag of willow leaves I ordered from binky bunny. I”ll keep looking for it and link it here.

Kathy, here is the question you posed about willows: https://binkybunny.com/Default.aspx?tabid=54&forumid=2&tpage=1&view=topic&postid=24835#25386 is this the one you were talking about?

that’s it! thanks Scarlet Rose, I couldn’t get it to show up in my search. The willow’s looking great, it might like central Texas after all.

You’re welcome! That is great it is doing so well! The search function is not working right now and I posted it in the technical section, however I am going to e-mail Binky Bunny about it too.

yes i want a willow tree but where i am moving to has no garden so i will just have to wait until i have a ground floor place or a house. But to answer your question i think willow would be a good idea also my nan has a garden which doesnt face the sun and so only gets a small amount of light as the sun is always shining on the front of the house anyway she has a little apple tree in her garden and it produces fruit each year! they arent as nice as red delicious but are good enough! good luck!
