Hey everyone! So I have tried literally everything with my rabbit because he keeps biting the carpet. I have tried apple cider vinegar, white vinegar, purfume, apple bitter spray, and he just licks it and loves it. All of them, which is harmful. I need a new solution! Please help!!

Carpet digging and chewing is very natural behavior. Most rabbits can be deterred from it, but if yours is especially determined to eat carpet, you may need to keep him in an area where he cannot even get to the carpet. Putting him in an x pen on a non-carpeted area when you are away and then letting him out when you can watch him and physically deter him from chewing the carpet is prob your best bet.

Hi Darth Vader! I would love to do that but the only issue is my apartment is only carpets. There’s is no spots without carpet as my apartment is super old!

I know how frustrating this habit is! My house is almost all wall to wall carpet, bunny room included. A low pile carpet and tiles has helped my situation immensely! My wall to wall carpet isn’t low enough so I have added some low pile 5×7 and 3×5 area rugs over the wall to wall carpet. There are some areas that aren’t covered but the hot spots are. I use heavy tile to cover the corners, in front of the door to the closet, on both sides of their cages (where they liked to dig to try and get behind them) and right by the baby gate used to block the room. These are the spots where they insisted on digging or chewing at. It is annoying having to clean the room with all these area rugs and tiles and also having to pick up a tile just to get stuff from the closet but it works.

I only wish I knew what the hot spots were going to be before some minor damage had already happened. You might be able to get away with just the tiles if you focus on those types of areas. I know it doesn’t look pretty but it’s worth it.

I don’t know your situation but this patchwork is only done in their room. For the rest of the house I just monitor them when they are out. So far there has been only one corner in the living room that they have decided to try and pull up and this can be remedied with one tile. I have tried using the ‘no’ and redirect technique but they want to go immediately back. I find that once they have their mind set on the carpet it’s difficult to change their mind. You can provide more enrichment and toys to try and help curtail it but this didn’t work for me.

I know my buns would eat carpet until they couldn’t eat any more. If you have a Lowe’s or Home Depot around you (I don’t know if you’re in the states or not) you can buy sheets of vinyl flooring or sheets of linoleum flooring and lay it over the carpet and it’s relatively cheap!
