Today I came home and sat down on my stool, gave bunnies refill on their hay and their daily pellets. Now, I notice Cadbury, a very healthy male just flipped down in his own feces?? It’s disgusting and his fur is disgusting. He’ll flop for a few seconds then get up and walk around, and flip again. He’s okay physically. What is happening? I’m really confused. EDIT; yes I set up a vet appointment in a few weeks, tops.

Many rabbits seem to like to hang out in their litter box, among the poop and pee. They often like to nibble on some hay there as well. It’s not very disgusting unless the bun has very smeary sticky poop or if the litter isn’t absorbant enough. Does he get poop on his fur? So it’s sticking to him, I mean?

My Buttercup loves flopping and rolling around in the litter box, usually when it’s relatively clean (I clean it/change it every morning) and so the majority of this occurs in the morning when there’s very little poop and pee in it. She has a great time. When she does it in the evening tho in a fairly ‘dirty’ litter box, her fur is never disgusting afterwards   I’m not sure why your boy’s fur is gross after…

To answer the question, it’s discussing because he plays in it when the pee is still wet. Like, right after his mom pees he’ll walk up and flip.

What litter material do you use? I like to put hay on top of horse bedding pellets or wood stove pellets, because the pellets soak up the pee, and the hay allows the pee to drain through, without puddling and causing wet fur. I think if you find a beddign material that allows the pee to drainthrough immediately, you’ll have less icky fur. For bunnies who like to flop in litter boxes and there are sticky cecotropes in the litter box – tough one. Ideally, yoru bunnies are eating thei cecoptropes. Occasionally, you’ll find uneaten ones. I find that my pair that are the best hay eaters, never leave uneaten cecotropes. Young bunnies that are starting to produce them, don’t necessarily eat all of them. So in that case – I’d go back to using hay on the bedding, because the uneven surface will help to hide the cecotropes.

Cadbury is about a few weeks away from being able to impregnate his mom. Unless you want one-eyed, 7-toed 9-legged rabbit babies, I’d start to separate them 🙂

It might be better to use something more absorbant so he doesn’t get pee all over him. Carefresh is very good at absorbing urine. But you really must separate him from the mum. He could get her pregnant very soon. Or his hormones could make them fight.
