My mini rex is about 7 months old. Just in case any of this is relevant: she is a bit overweight. She drinks from a bowl. She free-roams, except for when I need to sleep. She has two bowls – one in her cage and one on the other side of my room. She was a little stressed last night because the two of us had to temporarily move to my sister’s room, which smells like our other rabbit. The other rabbit wasn’t there, but she marked her territory in a few places, so the scent surely lingered.
I’m not sure if I just haven’t been paying enough attention, but it doesn’t look like she’s been drinking and I’m getting worried. She’s eating just fine – both pellets and hay, but she is being especially stubborn about drinking. She’ll take high water content foods (I’ve given her a couple grapes and a little apple sauce), but she won’t drink actual water.
I’ve tried a lot of things – I’ve cleaned her bowl, given her a couple other bowl options, tried both spring water from the bottle and tap water, tried putting grapes into the water (she was excited for the grapes, but after I put them into the water, she flicked at me and left), tried squeezing grapes and putting the juice into the water… I don’t know what to do. I doubt that she’s satisfied with just two grapes and some apple sauce… I can’t afford to take her to the vet either… A couple things I have yet to try, but might: Ice cubes, or forcing her to drink through the spare water bottle I have. If either of those are bad ideas, please do let me know.
Does anyone know why she won’t drink? Is she really satisfied with two grapes and some apple sauce? Any ideas for what else I can try? I will go to the vet in the morning if she hasn’t drank by then, but I am really hoping to resolve this before then. I have health anxiety myself, so naturally, I am very worried… Any tips will help, no matter how small. Thank you.

If your bun eats fresh greens, f ex  lettuce you can rinse the leaves and serve them wet. If a rabbit gets fresh greens, the rabbit will drink way less than a rabbit that only 3ats hay and pellets.

Is your rabbit pooping normally? If a rabbit doesnt drink the poop will become sparse and very dry, or, if its really bad, stop pooping altogether. If your bun’s poop is normal, it means she is getting fluids. Could she be drinking when you’re not looking? It can be difficult to tell unless you measure up her water.

If she’s used to drinking from bowls, you shouldnt change to a bottle. You can add a bottle, but dont take away the water bowls.

Ice cubes can be a good idea because they make the water cool, which the bun might find appealing, but test with an ice cube in one water bowl and let her have one “normal” water bowl.

Hay eating generally increases water consumption. How long has it been since she drank? I honestly probably only notice my bunnies drink once or twice a day (but then I’ll notice the bowl go down a lot overnight, prob since they eat the most hay then).

I agree with Bam, if she’s pooping normally (and peeing) if does mean she’s getting fluids, and giving some extra wet salad can help with that (but then you still might not see her drink).
