since i have been doing some more deep thought about getting a bunny and i have been told that vet bills for rabbits may be big so i was wondering if there is such a thing as insurance for rabbits because i have seen insurance for dogs and cats. insurance for a rabbit would be a great thing if i want to get a older bunn because they have more health problems as they get older and they are already pretty close to that possibly. i would love it if there is such a thing as rabbit insurance!

there certainly is, and several of us have it.
The most popular company is called VPI. They charge $12/month per rabbit. It takes a few months to start up, and they do not cover speuters, but after you get a first check up and your bunny is in good health, they will cover medical needs from that point on. They are tougher on pre-existing conditions. There are other sources of financial aide in times of crisis that have been listed in other posts here, but I like having the insurance.

Insurance laws and regulations can vary from state to state- so I would call VPI and talk to them about bunny insurance and if there is any waiting time to sign up, premiums, etc.

Remember tho that when adopting an adult bunny, “adult” is considered one year and older. They can live up to 12 years. So bun insurance is a good idea, but you might be surprised by how long your bunny will remain healthy for. “Senior” bunnies are 6 years and older.

Just wanted to add that some pet insurances will just reimburse you. So you might want to find out how long that takes since you will have to pay the vet bill upfront. Didn’t know if you were aware of this or not.

Hi! I’m brand new here. I don’t have a pet bunny yet (hopefully soon!) but I’ve used VPI for my pet rats in the past. How it worked was I would pay for a whole year in advance (about $85 per rat). When one of them got sick I would pay the vet, then submit a claim to VPI. They would send a reimbursement check a few weeks later that would cover about 50-80% of the total vet bill depending on what services were performed. So it doesn’t cover all of the fees, but it does help.

Very good point that Bunbuns added… you need to be prepared (or your parents do) to pay the costs upfront. It’s not like most human insurance where they bill the insurance first, and then send you a statement for the remainder.
