So I work in a pet grooming salon and usually come home from work smelling like a ton of strange dogs. I’ve noticed that my boy, Nacho, doesn’t like for me to pet him until I’ve showered or changed clothes and washed my hands. Usually he’s pretty friendly and outgoing, but when I initially get home from work he hides from me. Sometimes he even grunts and catches a tude. Does he just hate the dog smell?

I think he just hates the dog smell. We have had similar stories here before. One of our members volunteered at a shelter and her rabbit became practically murderous when she came home after working at the shelter. She had to shower and exchange all clothes and keep her “shelter clothes” in a separate room, otherwise her bun went more or less berzerk.

Rabbits have a very acute sense of smell, so it’s difficult to hide smells from them. Rabbits can get used to a dog or the smell of a dog, but you are dealing with different dogs all the time, so the situation is more difficult for your bun. I don’t know to what extent it’s reasonable to expect your bun to get used to dog scent. When no dog ever appears, the bun’s internal alarm system is likely to get less easily triggered of course, but I think it’d take time.
