What are the essentials every rabbit owner should have? Is there some kind of list somewhere I could refer to? Also, do rabbits have to have timothy hay? I was thinking that a mix of hays would be more interesting to a rabbit, not so bland. Should that mix include timothy hay?

          Hi there,
I don’t know everything. I am in the midst of learning about rabbits and don’t have any yet but I can give you a few basics.

You will need food bowls and water bowls or water bottles, clippers for their nails, something for if you clip the nails too short and need antiseptic, toys, (rabbit safe things). A rabbit brush because rabbits need to be brushed. Check the FAQ on this site.
Also rabbit.org is a great site. Also a good book is the House Rabbit Handbook.
If I missed anything I am sure the others on this site will fill you in.

          Thanks,
          Shannon

welcome!  these pages list the essentials.

the HRS page, scroll to the bottom for list:  http://www.rabbit.org/care/living-with-a-house-rabbit.html

the BinkyBunny FAQ list (see Question #4):  binkybunny.com/BUNNYINFO/FAQ/tabid/81/Default.aspx

and important thing to keep in mind is that the basic supplies are easy.  it’s the consumables that you will be spending the most time and money on.  i will suggest you not purchase a cage from a petstore b/c it is really just a waste of money and they are much too small.  it would end up having to be replaced before long anyways.  if you are creative and have time, you can build a fancy NIC condo that uses wire cube shelving grids and zipties.  if you prefer quick and easy, an xpen comes fully assembled can be set-up in about 5 minutes.

timothy hay is the recommended hay for adult rabbit 7 months-1 year and older.  but i know some people feed mixtures of different grass hays (brome, meadow, orchard).  alfalfa is not a grass hay and is only for babies under 7 months.  bunnies do love to eat, so if you’re worried about variety, you can change things up quite a bit with the veggies you offer.  the rabbit will need 2-4 cups of at least 3 different types per day.  you will learn quickly what your buns favorite veggies are and which ones they do not care for so much.

if you have any other questions, please ask.
