I know a lot of breeders will tattoo their rabbits ears. When I was younger we purchased some bunnies and everyone of them had a tattoo in their ear

My breeder used a Sharpie.. Which was good cuz it still gave all the litter info ( parents, number she was in litter) but didn’t hurt her and wore off after 2 months

Breeders pretty much make up their own tattoo system – there is no standard so it could mean anything. It’s impossible to know unless you talk with the breeder directly.

Bromley has a tattoo as well. When I got him neutered they asked if I wanted him tattooed as well because it was part of the neutering package (but I could opt out). I agreed to have him tattooed for ID purposes, but what seemed weird to me was when they asked if I wanted “a heart, star, ‘Mom,’ or anything else tattooed as well?” I have tattoos, but even I said no to that lol.

Dobby has the number 33 tattooed in his ear. I got him at a shelter but he was originally bought from a breeder. I toyed with the idea of calling him Thirty Three when I first got him. 🙂

                        Mine said “JJ8”.
I was told her father was Joseph and her mother was Josephine (hence my bun is named Jo-Jo), and she was the 8th born in the litter.

Are these the tattoos they look for in shows or are those different?

Definitely breeder tattoo – my Tans have tattoos also.

I agree with it being a breeder tattoo.
My Pongo has an “N” tattooed in his ear from the shelter neutering him. And Valkyrie, them asking you if you wanted a heart, star, or “Mom” tattooed in his ear in conjunction with the other marking… that, wow. I have never heard of that before lol. That’s crazy!

WHAT DO YOU MEAN A ”LAB”?

Rabbits used in labrotories (for experiments/studies/testing) can have their ears tattoed or tagged for identification. They don’t usually have formal names so the tattoo would be how they would be identified.

I think it’s more likely to be a breeder’s tattoo though.

The easiest way to find out would be to ask the person you got them from.

Its probably a show bunny/breeders tag. Its used to identify the rabbit.

I’ve had every bunny I’ve ever owned tattooed.

No worries, its pretty common practice and doesn’t effect the bunny in any way.

All show rabbits must be tattooed. We used to do them in 4H.
