A few times now I have heard my rabbit chew on nothing. It’s not the usual tooth grinding, which I’m familiar with an used to. She just sounds like she does when she’s chewing on veggies or hay, except she is nowhere near her food. I looked up if rabbits regurgitated heir food but all the answers I got were no. Does anyone have any idea what this is?

Most commonly, this is when they are eating their cecatrophs.
Are you seeing her reach down to her hind end, then sit up chewing?

Otherwise, it could be she has something irritating her in her mouth. Like a spur on the molar. They can snag bits of hay or fur.

It could also be purring. I wasn’t sure what that noise was the first time my bunny purred so I googled videos

I don’t think it’s her eating her cecatrophs because I have seen her do that and I don’t think this sounds the same. This sounds more like she’s eating wet food. Maybe I’m just missing the part where she reaches down to her behind hahahah, it usually happens at night when I’m trying to sleep. She just sits next to my head and makes that chewing sound!

If it sounds wet, it could be her teeth are bothering her, and she’s producing saliva to coat her mouth and sooth sharp teeth edges. Such discomforts are common in rabbits, and if you suspect this may be the case, going to the vet to have it assessed is best. If you notice she’s eating less pellets and/or hay and/or veggies, or becomes a bit more selective with eating and drops some food, this can be an indication of teeth issues.

Generally, rabbit teeth are kept smooth by eating hay, but in rabbits that don’t eat enough hay or whose mouths are inclined to develop them, they need to be filed down by a vet under anesthesia.
