I have a 7 month old Lionhead who weighs about 3 to 4 pounds. He was running around my room and I went downstairs for about 5 minutes and came back up and a piece of chocolate filled with caramel was sitting on my floor and it had teeth marks in the caramel so I know he was eating it even though I didn’t directly see it. It was in my trash so he pulled it out. The whole candy weighs 1 ounce and it’s mostly caramel with probably about 1/2 cm of chocolate surrounding it. I’m really worried and don’t know what to do. I would say he ate about 1/4 of it at most. He’s acting fine right now and eating his hay but this only happened about an hour ago. Can somebody please help me or tell me if they think it will be fatal or if there’s a chance he’ll be okay?

The photos I attacthed are of the chocolate, the one on the left is just for size comparison. I ate about half of it, so he didn’t eat the entire amount that’s missing I just attached these to show how much chocolate/caramel there is.

He’ll probably be fine. I would be more worried about the sugar overload than the small amount of milk chocolate.

Okay thank you. I googled about rabbits eatint caramel and didn’t find much about how toxic it is for rabbits but I do know it has a lot of sugar and fat.

Caramel isnt exactly toxic to rabbits, but it could cause some tummy upset. Its basically made of various forms of sugar and fat. You may see some weird looking poop. Try to encourage him to eat hay, for example by hand feeding individual strands. Hydration is important too, if he gets fresh greens or herbs you can rinse them in water just before serving them so he gets some extra fluids in him.

Its good to have simethicone baby gas drops at home for first aid use if a bun gets an upset stomach.

As Bam said, caramel isn’t toxic. But all that sugar can lead to upset within the GI tract. If it were me, I would just watch him. He may have no ill effects at all. If he does have some upset, then you can try some simethicone.

Extra fluids and extra hay over the next day or two probably wouldn’t hurt.
