Rabbit allergy? :(

I’m beginning to think I may be allergic to Mr Roger. For the first two months of owning him, I seemed not to be allergic to him.

I’m not sure if it’s his moult, if its just taken a while to kick in or if I’ve just got a cold.

I’ve been allergic to animals before, such as my pet cockatiel and used to be very allergic to cats. However I seemingly grew out of it and co-existed with a cat and dog for a few years. For this reason I thought I’d be fine with a rabbit.

My runny nose seems to get worse in the evening which is also when I’m most around him. I think it’s worse when he sits with me but am not actually sure.

I get very bad hayfever so I’m really hoping its just a cold because I don’t think I could cope with them both.

Hopefully it’ll only flare up when he moults and he’ll stop soon.

Cockatiels are VERY “dusty” though, my sister has one and he’s the only pet she’s ever had an allergic reaction to. She adores him though and he’s spoiled rotten.

My husband is allergic to animals. But the 10 bunnies, 4 cats, and 1 hamster don’t know that lol. He takes a daily allergy pill, loratadine, and when we have to handle them a lot for nails and such, he takes pseudephedrine. For the most part, he manages well.

Are you sure its not the hay dust or litter? Maybe too much bunny fur up your nose from the shed? My bunnies are shedding horribly right now and there seems to be bunny fluff everywhere, including on my face! The dry air and static aren’t helping anything either.

It’s more common to be allergic to the bunny’s food than the bunny. Timothy hay is a common allergen. This can be easily remedied by switching to another type of hay.

My first thought was the hay as well. When we had Boston, my reaction to hay was so bad that hubby had to be the only one to actually feed her. It’s not nearly as bad now, being in a house vs. an apartment and we have a good air purifier. No matter what the allergy, maybe look into getting a good air purifier–can’t hurt! I take an allergy pill every day too and that helps a ton.

My boyfriend has allergies to hay but we have a humidifier that runs and he shop vacs the bunnies cage and we brush the bunnies, and he has an inhaler that he can use if it becomes too much.

Well, it did last way longer than a cold and my GP agreed it seems like allergies (in the past when I’ve gone to the pharmacist they’ve never been able to do anything because the stuff that barely works for me isn’t sold over the counter).

I’m now taking the same anti-allergy pills as before, plus an extra one on the side and an even stronger nasal spray. I still need to collect my eye drops – I was meant to get them over a week ago (maybe two).

Right around the time I started the allergy pills, we had a room inspection. Roger had to be rehomed for the night and the whole place was cleaned from top to bottom. I think that may have helped getting rid of any residual hair/dander/hay dust. Unfortunately, we forgot about his litter tray on collection and it was left in their car which has been getting repairs since then.

I’m not sure if it’s going to build up again and have returned him to a cheaper type of hay. I accidentally missed a few days with no flare up so it may be that the problem has been resolved. With any luck I’ll be able to thwart hayfever season.

I’m still too scared to try his old hay again to see if it I’ve truly got control of it (we still have most of the bag). Thanks for all of your advice – I did read it even if I’m the worst replier.

I think I spoke too soon when I said mine were better now! We just got fresh cut timothy and orchard and I’m dying a slow painful death! I got a good nasal spray and refilled my inhaler and it’s helping. Spring is always the worst!

Oh no. Sorry to hear that. Allergies are horrible.

My seasonal allergies didn’t start until slightly later in the year where I’m living now so it’s too early to say. His litter tray came back and it’s got a small amount of the very green ay which I’ve left in. Not sure I’ll be replenishing it.
