Hi I have a question about a stray rabbit I picked up

        Pic at this link

        i605.photobucket.com/albums/tt133/saturnv/r2.jpg

she had a abscess on her face so I took her to the
vet and they drained it and prescribed
liquid cephalexin orally 1/2 ml every 8hr for 7 days
and baytril 1 pill every 12 hr 10 days

Here are the pics of the cephalexin

        Front

        Back with dosage info

        i605.photobucket.com/albums/tt133/saturnv/rabmed2.jpg

but when I looked them up on the internet
these sites say cephalexin isn’t safe to use
        orally

Cephalexin, Injectable Use? Yes Oral Use? No

        http://www.medirabbit.com/Unsafe_medicatio…iotics.htm

        Cephalexin

        Diarrhea after oral administration.

Called the Vet and she said cephalexin is approved for Rabbits ?

I would like to be sure that this is safe to give her

        Thanks for any info

I am also finding information that Cephalexin can cause problems when given orally- I found it on a chart on the House Rabbit Society website… http://www.rabbit.org/health/antibiotics.html

I would hold off on giving the Cephalexin until you can verify this info- but you can go ahead and give the Baytril.  Both of those meds are antibiotics and do not need to be used together- and bunnies are commonly prescribed Baytril.

I will alert the other Forum Leaders to see if they have any experience with giving oral Cephalexin.

Did the vet do a culture on the abscess?

If it were me, I would ask for another medication as it does not appear to be safe for rabbits in the oral form. If your vet does not want to do this then perhaps you need to seek another vet.

As Kathip said, the baytril is perfectly safe to give and I would just give that for now.

No she said if it came back she would.

I’ll just stick to using the baytril for now

She’s Lovely! It’s great you are doing this. She sounds like she is in very capable hands.

I just looked at her photo and I love the Dutches. I have a little gray dutch as well named Mango. She’s very pretty.

Glad she is in good care with you now.

I know you talked to your vet and she said it was approved for rabbits, but do you think she would be open to reading some of the articles so she could address the concerns directly? Even my own vet, who is rabbit savvy, doesn’t have a problem saying “I don’t know” sometimes and is open to information.

Also, if the vet is defensive, you can simply refuse to use it because it has given your bunny diarrhea and that’s enough for you. If the vet is not interested in learning anything more about it, it may be a good idea to find another vet in your area. The House Rabbit Society lists recommended vets by region. http://www.rabbit.org
