Ok. I have a silly question for you guys. I always buy my rabbits food in large quantities and store it accordingly. For the lettuce and spring mix that is usually mixed together in a container with water to help keep it fresh. I change the water every two days to help maintain the freshness and to check and see if any of the greens are turning. This afternoon I didn’t notice until I had mixed everything that the spring mix had spinach in it. I don’t plan on giving her spinach and plan to pick it out as I make her greens up each day. The question I have is there a risk of storing it all like this? Or will it be safe for me to just pick out the spinach as I had planned?

Usually it works well to store greens dry, not in water, unless it’s just the stems in water, like flowers? Things may be going slimy faster in water. The way I learned to keep things really fresh was when you get everything home from the store, dunk everything in a sink full of water with a cup of vinegar mixed in, then dunk again in fresh water, then dry completely before putting in the fridge. If you can have a little air in the sealed bag it also helps (the spots where the bag clings to the lettuce then to turn slimy faster). I know that wasn’t really your question just thought I would share!

Also spinach is fine to feed in moderation, so as long as it’s not most of the spring mix it’s fine to leave in. And definitely fine to pick some out as you see fit. Spinach is recommended in moderation due to calcium and oxalate content, but it’s not toxic or anything like that!

Thanks for the advice. I usually store in water because I found it stays fresh longer. I did an experiment with different forms of storing and found this works best for us. She usually goes through her greens pretty quickly since I don’t buy the lettuce and spring mix in huge amounts. It’s usually the parsley, boo Chou, radicchio, cilantro and carrot tops I buy in large amounts and do store them as you suggested. I will see if she will eat the spinach. She may not and pick it out herself like she does arugula.
