Sandy gets spayed next month as soon as I get the number and call to schedule an appt.  But I have a few questions first.  We did some rearranging yesterday and moved our computer desk around and took out Sandy’s cage and built her a new one in the bunny room/office.  We left it at one floor for now until after she get spayed since we don’t want her jumping and hurting herself.  They were doing fine but then Gracie was trying to nip at Archie so we put a giant piece of cardboard to blook their view of her, which helped a lot.  So unless you guys say otherwise, I’ll keep the cardboard there for now….

The vet where we’re going to get her spayed is about an hour away.  We’re going there because it’s the shelter’s vet and they’ll do it a lot cheaper than anyone around here.  I’ll probably ask them for a cone just in case she starts to fiddle with her stiches.  I hate to drive all that way but at least we’ll save money.  Do you usually have to pay more for the vet to take out the stitches (I believe that vet doesn’t do dissolvable stiches)?  I’d rather just go down to our vet since it’s a lot closer.  When we bring her home should I put her in a smaller cage in the other room away from the other buns?  She usually runs all around her cage in the morning and thought if she’s in a smaller cage she won’t as much.  I think that’s all the questions I have, I’ve been looking at other people’s post about rabbit spays.

Oh one more….should I take her to my vet this week to get her checked out and have a fecal check before she gets spayed??

Here’s a picture of the new setup (Archie and Gracie’s is the same).  We bought a bigger thing of lino at an outlet store and finally found some coroplast!  It’s actually a lot more organized with her in there now and the spare bedroom looks so much nicer with the desk!

The vet who did the surgery takes out the stitches at no cost.   You may want to call your local vet to see how much if anything they charge for removing stitches that was done by another vet.  That way you would be sure and not be in for a surprise when you take her in to the regular vet.

IT is good for the buns to stay near each other after a spay.  Once her hormones die down the nipping will die down or stop altogether. Unspayed buns have a stronger odor that other buns can smell.  And their urine is stronger too.

This may be why she is getting nipped.  If they can still be near each other with the cardboard up I think that would be a good idea.  That way they will still know each other when she heals and bonding time comes.

I would call and check with your closer vet- but most clinics will remove sutures for no charge even if they did not do the surgery.  Humane Societies and specialists like orthopedic surgeons do not expect people to drive back an hour plus for a 30 second suture removal.  Just explain that the rescue group is spaying her and that you would prefer not to drive that far for suture removal.  I bet they will do it for no charge- it is generally considered a professional courtesy.  But it the incision looks red, sore or weepy- then you could expect to have follow up charges for a vet exam possibly and medications.  But for a simple suture removal that a technician or assistant can do- that is easy.

Even if they were to charge $5-10 bucks (which I have not seen done before) it would still be cheaper on gas and less stress on Sandy if she does not like the car ride.

After the surgery I would keep her where she is used to being- I think familiarity will be comforting.  So if she just moved into a section of the new deluxe awesome sprawlng mansion- I would put her back there after surgery.

That is a serious bunny mansion!  And I am totally wanting one of those once my new guy is ready to be introduced to Cotton and Schroeder.  Cotton and Schroeder tolerate each other well- but they are still separated.  So Griffin will be attempted to be bonded to one of them.  If that bunny mansion had a pool and game room it would rival the PlayBoy Bunny mansion.   LOL.  (I used to watch Girls Next Door- the girls that lived with Hugh Heffner in the mansion).

I am showing that pic to my husband when he gets home tonight!!  It looks so clean and professional- like it is MEANT to be part of the room.

LOL Katnip it’s only clean because we just put in the new floor yesterday I’m sure they’ll get it all messy soon enough   Plus I just vacuumed…they poop wars have started already and Sandy has been spraying too  I just put in the mini haven for Sandy because she looked a bit bored.  I think when they’re bonded it might go back to the one cage that Archie and Sandy are in but you never know!

Ok then we’ll keep her in this room.  If the others make her stress out then we can always put the cardboard up.  I took the cardboard up to see how Gracie was this time and she’s been really good, just sniffing all around and following her.  She’s very protective of “her man” and I think she’s a bit jealous too.  I think Sandy’s a little depressed from moving, she’s not her jumpy self

Should I get Sandy checked before she gets spayed?  Or maybe just a fecal check?  I wouldn’t want to expose my guys to something even though I doubt she has anything.  We got her when she was 8 weeks old so she wasn’t exposed to much before.

I would recommend a fecal check for Sandy.  I am sure you know how it is- poos don’t stay in one place- they can easily get kicked or flicked into another bunnies pen/space.

As for an exam-if they find something on the fecal they may need to examine her to prescribe meds.  Otherwise if you note no problems- the vet that does the surgery should do a pre-surgical exam on her the day she has her surgery before she gets anesthesia and those should be just a thorough as a “new pet exam”- since they are looking for phyiscal signs that she is healthy enough for anesthesia.

Thanks Katnip!  I’ll give them a call tomorrow and stop over there and drop it off for a fecal check.  I got the number for the vet for Sandy to get spayed and called up today.  I schedule it for Sept. 2nd at 8:30am.  I won’t be able to pick her up until 7:30pm so I’ll have my mom come with me in the evening since hubby works afternoons.  It’s an hour drive but it’s only $110, so it’s worth it.  I have to pick her up that day because I have jury duty the next morning YUCK!  Not looking forward to that

I replied to your post but I can’t see my reply this is just testing to see if my stuf works right now.  Hopefully

And call your reg vet to see if she charges for taking out stitches that another vet did.  Just to be sure and no surprises.   I think the buns can stay where they are with the cardboard divider.  That is probably best will help with bonding.

The nipping may be because the girl bunny has hormones kicking in  and she has a stronger odor than the other altered bunny.  Sometimes that happens.   It may die down in a month or so once her hormones die down.  Then you can work on bonding again.

I’ll call the vet today and tomorrow I’ll go up there for a fecal check or I’ll be running all around town today and might as well do it tomorrow and do some shopping   Anything special I need to do before the spay?  Yeah I think Sandy is starting to get hormonal, she still wants attention but seems a bit mad at me….teenagers   I think it might be Gracie, but someone keeps peeing in the cage or more like markings I think.  So glad we got the coroplast and got rid of the carpet, so much easier to clean up!

I’m a little worried and might see if my mom can come over for a bit the next day because the day after her spay I have to go in for jury duty and don’t know how long that is   I’m afraid to leave her alone

Skibunny, nice upgrade to your condo. I really like it. Once the ‘Groups’ are working maybe you could start an ‘NIC Archie-tecture Group’ I’d join right away. I’m thinking of making my trio’s condo bigger for the winter as my rabbits get most of their exercise on a deck and it will be too cold for them.
(Sorry, your post was about spaying… my comment is about habitat…)

Haha it’s ok!  I’ll have to have my husband make that group up, he’s the brains of all this   I really like how it looks right now, maybe we’ll add that part on and leave the haven in there for them to play   I wish I had a nice deck or even a patio for them to run around in the summer.  My parents have a patio and we’d always bring Mickey up to lounge around.

I called our vet up and tomorrow I’ll drop off the sample.  But good news!  They said they’ll take the stiches out for free!    I’m so anxious for this to happen and start the bonding process!  How long do you usually wait until you start that?  A few weeks after the surgery?

Skibunny, I want that NIC group. Keep taking photos of what your husband comes up with next.

They say 1 month, but better 2 months’ wait after the spay before bonding.

I told him he should become a rabbit cage architecture

Could they run around in the same room after she’s spayed?  I mean seperately?  I know right now I’m afraid that Gracie might be territorial, but I don’t know if her being in the same space would help or not.  I can hardly wait!!

That depends. Whatever space they get to use by themselves now they will claim and defend later. As long as you have a neutral area for them where they can really cement their bond it’s fine. But I often found to be short on such space during bonding.

I love designing habitats. It’s part of the fun of having rabbits, isn’t it?

I think we might do the bonding in the dining room or kitchen (which are next to each other).  Archie and Gracie get the hallway and living room and poor Sandy just has the spare bedroom right now.  Maybe after she’s spayed she can go in the living room.  But we will block off behind the couch because it’s so hard to clean up back there

Yes it is!  I really wish that the makers of the NIC cubes would sell those at petstores because those are so wonderful and I wouldn’t have known about them if I hadn’t found this site!
