I was wondering if anyone or anybun could give me the final word on the following veggies:

Chard: this is not on the HRS webpage, but I have seen it listed elsewhere as bunny approved.

Turnip greens: HRS says yes to radish greens, but what about turnip greens?

Sugar snap peas: Is it really ok to feed my bun this?  I thought there was a “no pea policy.”  Do I have to “de-pea” the pod before I give it to my    bun?

Broccoli: Everywhere it says “mostly stems and leaves.”  If my bun likes the top part, is it ok for him to eat that too?

Bell peppers:  Some places say yes, some say yes only to green bell peppers, some say no all together.  Which is it?

Thanks for your help… I just need some clarification here.  The grocery store is always an adventure, because we can never seem to come to a conclusion about the above veggies.

Chard, turnip greens and bell peppers are fine.

Broccoli in moderation and all parts are fine.

Sugar snap peas – not entirely sure since I don’t share mine :~)

I agree with Sarita about the greens- I feed chard and turnip greens and brocolli.

The type of peas they can have are the ones that have edible pods- so the type in stir fry.  I do buy these for my bunnies occasionally as my grocery store sells them in bulk but the price is up to $3.99 a lb now- so I have not been buying them lately.  And when I do I usually one give 1-2 pods since they are not super cheap.  I make the majority of the “salads” to be greens-  like romaine, collard greens, escarole, etc- and then usually add some veggies like brocolli (which must be given in moderation), pea pods, carrot chuck, etc.

I can tackle the Sugar Snap Peas question because there was a post in the fall of 2008 that I remembered seeing and I found it!

Here’s the link: binkybunny.com/FORUM/tabid/54/aff/1…fault.aspx No Sugar Snap peas. Only Snow peas.

And to quote Osprey, who is very knowledgeable on all things bunny:

                  “Snow Peas (yay!):

Sugar peas, sometimes called Snap Peas (boo):”

I have a question about the harder and thicker white parts on a Lettuce leaf so far I have been tearing them off before giving it to my bunnys. Do I need to keep doing that or can I just give them the whole leaf ?

I wash them too before and make sure they are mostly dry by wipe them with toilet paper…is there anything wrong if I leave them mostly damp before I “serve dinner” ?

Give them the whole leaf – if they don’t like that part they won’t eat it anyway. Most of my rabbits eat around that part but I give them the whole thing.

Mostly damp is just fine – it’s extra water if they eat them right away.

Yes, good way for them to get extra fluids. You can even give the lettuce core too – many of them love it.
