I need to set up a pen that Griffin cannot jump out of- so I was planning on getting a 4 foot high X-pen.  Then after thinking about it- realized that I need TWO doors for now- and would like 2 doors in a pen that large anyway most likely.  Griffin and Schroeder are going to put back to side by side- and Griffin in the middle of the night has climbed or jumped over into Schroeder’s side and the scuffle woke me up.  And that was with 3 1/2 foot tall NIC pen.  If I had not been sleeping on the couch- I never would have heard the scuffle.

I am out of NIC cubes- so thought I would go with the xpen which is my final goal for a nice looking pen anyway-  if I buy TWO 8 panel pens- are they pretty easy to configure how you would like with the doors where you would like- and able to have a single panel dividing the pen.  Or are the sides well attached and it is going to take a lot of work to get it how I need it to be with 2 doors and a middle divider.

Any advantage to buying the heavy duty version- the “gorilla tough”, other than the fact my husband may freak out over the cost of setting up a cage that Griff cannot get out of?   http://www.drsfostersmith.com/produ…pcatid=766

I figure once I get an x-pen at 4ft high- I can keep him in it by either adding a NIC roof- since I will then have panels- OR use a NIC cube as a “fence topper” to keep him from climbing if that is what he is doing.  Zip tying a cube panel all the way around the pen- like the START of a roof but the rest is still open.  I LOVE open tops for tossing in hay, etc.

It’s tricky to see quite how those panels go together, but I have a Precision xpen and it is very easy to separate and move panels around. It’s basically a rod with a nut on the end that vertically fits through little holes in the panels. I imagine you could create a divider easily as well out of extra panels.

And I’m not really sure there would be any advantage to the heavy duty. It’s probably just heavier gauge metal. Unless he’s moving the walls of the pen around, a normal pen would probably be fine as long as it’s tall enough. I imagine the only reason to get a heavy duty one is if you have a big dog in there who’s able to push the pen around and possibly knock it over.

Good luck in your xpen search! It makes me feel lucky that I have a bun who can be contained by a fence only 1 NIC cube high.

They actually have those clip things to attach them together. At least mine does – it’s a Midwest pen. I cannot tell what this pen has.

They do look to have those metal bands that link the sides together. I find them easy to set up but not so easy to remove panels for if you want to place a divider. I think your idea with the grid topper would be a good deterrant. Visually it would have Griffin hesitate on trying to jump I would think…

I don’t think you’ll need the Gorilla Tough, it seems to be more designed for dogs that could break out (not that my bunnies aren’t crafty, but they haven’t learn how to bend metal yet..thank goodness!)

A partial roof is a good idea, some of my bunnies have roofs over just one half of their condo, and I agree with you, its nice to not have to open the door to the cage to get the food and veg in.
