Question about the best way to clean

Hi all,

Some of you may remember that I’m having issues getting my female dutch, Chance, to bond to my male rex, Andre (there’s a whole thread in the behaviour thread explaining).

Yesterday they went to stay with someone from the rabbit rescue where I got Andre for some "professional bonding" and I’m hoping it’s going well since I haven’t heard anything.  I trust this person completely since she bonded three rabbits together, including a little dutch who seems to have a similar personality to Chance (I think it runs in the breed).  Also, it seemed to be off to a good start between the 2 hours in the car where they cuddled together willingly and the fact that once they got out in her kitchen Chance showed no aggression.

So, my question is about once I get them home, I want to completely remove their scent from the places they’ve been.  I’m planning on shampooing the rug and wiping everything down really well, especially the cages.  However, what should I use to wipe it down?  I use white vinigar with water on their litter boxes, will this remove their scent?

Babybunsmum – You just need a few more cups of coffee!!!! The link takes you to a previous thread on cleaning.  Anyway, another good cleaning method is to use a bleach solution.  This is what Save A Bunny uses to disinfect cages when getting in a new rabbit and also as a general cleaning. One part bleach to 10 parts of water.  The vinegar smell I just hate but I’m sure works well.

I’d be worried about the shampoo on the carpet, since the chemicals might be bad for the bunnies, particularly if they sometimes munch on it.

White vinegar diluted with water is the way to go for sure, since it will remove the scent from the cages.

They don’t usually munch too much, only one spot really and I’ve taken to blocking off that area. Also, I’ve used it before with no problems plus my parents use it in their house with their cat and he’s never gotten sick either. I’m pretty sure it’s non-toxic.

I am wondering if you can use Natures Miracle in the carpet cleaner instead of the shampoo? Wipe things down with the diluted bleach solution when they are in another closed room and open up a window if you can to air out & dry the spaces.

Scarlet Rose – Good idea on the Nature’s Miracle.  I’m looking at my bottle right now and its says "for use on all carpets, floors, furniture, clothing, cages, litter boxes and all pet & sleeping areas".

That is great! I know on my carpet cleaner there is a separate dispenser for the shampoo (you put it in full strength) and it dilutes it and sprays it on the carpet at the press of a button.  Now I know what I’m going to do the next time I clean carpets.
