Mine’s getting spayed this Wednesday (can’t wait!).  I called my vet up just to see how much they were and she said $255 or less.  But I’m going through the shelter’s vet under their name and getting a discount ($110).  I’d call around and price it out…make sure they’re experienced in fixing rabbits.  And make sure they don’t tell you to fast your rabbit before hand, that’s a big no no.

Maybe you can ask if can do payments so you don’t have to pay all at once.  I wouldn’t see why they wouldn’t do that since you’re paying it off anyways just not all at once.  Thanks!  I’ll post an update after her spay.

Cost is always surprising when looking at stuff for rabbits. I literally was shocked calling for spay prices-and shocked as well that not all vets do it(they’re sold in petstores-so I *figured* all vets treated them, as they do dogs/cats! ~silly me)

Cost can really really range-I’ve heard of people paying as little as fifty dollars, but 250$ is about average.

I cannot overstate asking what’s included in the procedure when you phone around. My vet is costly but she has three techs with epinephrine pens ready for every surgery in case they crash, as well a heated blanket (rabbits can get hypo very easy in surgery) and continous monitoring of all vitals (not just machines but techs watching carefully)-then there is a tech one-on-one with my rabbit until they wake up AND eat. I think this is HUGELY important because one of the very very minute risks is them waking in ‘fits and starts’ and they can injure themselves if they freak out. I belong to a disabled rabbit mailing list and there are two bunnies on there who had that. Some vets just put them in a cage after surgery and then you come get them hours later.

Sooooo-point of me going on and on and on (Sorry!! ) is you might find a vet who’s very cheap-but doesn’t give pain meds or monitor after surgery. It’s personal how much we can afford, but it’s also a personal preference how much attention you want your bunny given when they are in for surgery. So ask lots and lots of questions-and make sure you feel comfortable with the level of care and the vet!

And->A vet who recommends fasting before surgery-hang up the phone and cross them off your list! Your rabbit should eat right up until the surgery

This site is helpful for finding a vet http://www.rabbit.org/faq/sections/vet.html

Also, even if they have the sign up requesting payment at time of service, it can’t hurt to explain your situation to the vet and see if they can work with you and do some sort of payment plan. Yoy need to find a vet that both you and your bunny will be comfortable with.

Some vets do-but the time to ask is not at payment time. Ask well ahead if they take payments, if you wait until it’s paying time they want the full amount. Some will take post dates cheques or your credit card and dates to put payments through

Barbie’s right check out that link-it has great questions to ask your vet for establishing a relationship as well as to rule out a vet who doesn’t know enough about rabbits or is way out of date on information
