i was lookiong on petfinder and i saw a bunny that i want to rescue. it says that her breed is american. i tried to look up “american” to learn more about her and how big she gets etc but im not sure if this is an actual breed. i put the link for her in this post in hopes that maybe one of you will be able to tell what she might be from looking at her.

im going to michigan in a few weeks and im hoping they have her still. im going to call tomorow and see what i need to do and if she is there. i begged my dh to let me get her. he is sort of annoyed with me now lol. wish me luck!!

From what I understand of the American breed is they come in white, or blue. Not black.. this bun is probably a mix and they just put in American as the generic “Who knows” kind of breed.

Yeah I’d ditto that-it’s too hard to know so it’s usually just ‘best guess’

She is gorgeous! Her blurb says that she’s the only one of the litter that does not have lop ears, so she must be a mix of some sort. It really doesn’t matter what breed she is, her care will be the same. I do have to say tho, I’d recommend you wait to adopt another bunny, especially a female, until both your boys have been neutered.

Oh those ears! She’s delightful – she looks to be posing!

Her Mum is listed as harlequin mix. Some of the siblings are harli lops and one listed as american/lop mix… perhaps the rescuers knew of the fathers breed? Not sure how the lop ear comes into it. 2 things are certain: she’s a mix breed and she’s cute!

She’s gorgeous. From what I can tell about the listing of American on Petfinders for rabbits is that many shelters just use this particular breed when they don’t know the breed – I see it listed alot and I know that the breed is something else.

yah i figured they prob just put american on there. i saw some that just said bunny rabbit for the breed lol. the other 2 should be neutered within the month. jack can get it done anytime but we were waiting for charlie to feel better. i wanted to take them the same day. they arent in the same cage yet and i wouldnt be putting her in with either of them for a while. she is also spayed. were u recommending it bc they will fight or would there be other problems? thanks for the advice!

Big time for fighting-you’ll want them all fixed ahead of time. When they don’t feel the urge to breed, and defend territory it’s much easier to make friends.

well, the boys have an appt to be neutered on the 21st. of course im having charlie go in ahead of time to make sure he is ok to be neutered since he had the respiratory probs. hoping everything works out and i can get both of them done then. if not both, then jack will for sure have it done. if they didnt already spay julia then i believe they do before they let u bring them home. jack and charlie are both in separate cages right now and i cant put them together until they are neutered. they do play together while they are out though. should i just let them out separate until hormones die down? if im able to get julia, she will have a NIC cage until i can bond her with one or both of the boys. should i keep her in a different area of the house until the hormones die down in all of them? we have a main floor that the boys are on and i can either keep her upstairs or in our basement. our basement is furnished as a family room. i didnt even realize that they might fight over her.

There are a lot of “what-ifs” about the whole situation, especially since Charlie and Jack are not “truly” bonded and living together 24/7. After the neuters and healing period you may need to do some “refresher” bonding sessions to get them together permanently. It sounds like you have a good plan tho. I had forgotten you were waiting for Charlie’s illness to subside.

I didn’t see when she is going to be ready to be spayed. I’d maybe see about waiting to bring her home until that’s been done. Even if they’ll let you adopt her but if they can see her thru the surgery and beginning recovery.

yah i wish charlie and jack couldve been neutered a while ago. its just easier on us to get them both done at the same time with all the driving and school schedules. the only trouble they had with staying the night together was the humping. jack didnt bite but im sure he would not like to be in that situation with no where to hide so i figured id wait to get them fixed. plus i bet its easier with a nuetral cage.

on the website under her description it says that she is spayed and house trained. but im thinking that they say spayed/neutered bc they do it before they leave the shelter. i filled out the questionaire for adoption and the woman is supposed to call me and let me know if i can adopt her. im going to see about putting a deposit down or even paying the fees over the phone so they can have her spayed when i come down there. im in iowa but im going to see my dad in michigan for 3 or 4 days. the shelter is on the way there. im not sure that they would let me take her without her being spayed. it also said something about their fees going towards getting them fixed and their vet care. i would love to have that out of the way before i got her and only pay $90 for it! just not sure whether its already done or has to be done. im nervous as it is with a neutere, i cant imagine the anxiety of a spay!

thanks for the help. its really shocking that those cute lop boys are her brothers! they look nothing like her!
