Chance is getting Bactrim now.its her second day.the vet gave her first dose at 3 pm yesterday and he said to give her every 12 hours.so that means 3 am and 3 pm.

the thing is,i work earlier than 3 pm and im asleep by 3 am and my boyfriend would be at work too so nobody could be with her at those times..so is it possible to change the time that i give her medication?

I would call your Vet and ask.
I’m not familiar with that antibiotic, so not sure if changing times around is a huge deal. most though 2x a day is good, so 10 hours is ok… so my guess would be it’d b ok to switch it a little so the times work better with your schedule. but call just in case.

I understand your point and I’m inclined to suggest you push it to 5PM and 5AM next. It may mean waking up early, but you can go back to bed at 5AM and still have had a sound night’s sleep. I doubt it will hare Chance if it isn’t a pain killer and she isn’t in discomfort without it. I don’t recall why she’s being treated exactly.

I would switch it now since she’s only had one dose. You have to make it convenient for you to give her the dose and if it doesn’t work for you timewise, it’s just not going to work. You need the dosage times to be practical to your time frame.

I hope Chance is doing well. I had posted this in your previous thread but didn’t know if you’d notice it so am moving it here. Disregard this if you already know it, but I didn’t know if you know it seems to be important to disinfect your bunny’s cage or pen with a 10% ammonia solution so the oocysts will be killed and can’t reinfect your bunny: I found this under Coccidiosis in the Merck Veterinary Manual: http://www.merckvetmanual.com or http://www.merckvetmanual.com/mvm/index.jsp?cfile=htm/bc/171332.htm

Treatment will not be successful unless a sanitation program is instituted simultaneously. Elimination of fecal-oral transmission of infective oocysts is achieved by preventing feed hoppers and water crocks from becoming contaminated with feces. Hutches should be kept dry and the accumulated feces removed frequently. Wire cage bottoms should be brushed daily with a wire brush to help break the life cycle of the protozoa. Ammonia (10%) solution is lethal to oocysts and is the best choice to disinfect cages or ancillary equipment exposed to fecal material

I think as long as you change the litterbox often and clean with vinegar and water you will be fine. I’ve treated rabbits with coccidia before and just kept their areas cleaned and medicated them and it cured them.

I agree with your boyfriend on this…keep it clean, change the litter often, medicate. It’s always worked for me and I’ve never gone to extreme measures like the ammonia or disinfecting.

Yes, I don’t think the vet would expect you to wake up in the middle of the night to give the medication.

I agree- I work at a vet clinic- and we recommend adjusting it to a schedule that you are able to give the meds.  If the happens to be 6am and 7pm- that is fine- it is close enough.  There is a bit of leeway in the dosing.

The labels often read instead of “twice a day” “every 12 hours” because believe it or not- there are people that will give the meds at 6am and 10 am (4 hours apart- but TWICE a day) and be confused as to why their cat is not getting any better.  I honestly talked to someone that was doing that!

So more important than the strict 12 hour dosing- is a convenient schedule that works for you that is reasonably close to 12 hour dosing.
