Hi all, long time forum lurker here and I must say this forum helped me a lot!

Backstory: I rescued a stray bunny 2 weeks ago, there were a bunch outside where I am. After bringing her to the vet, did an xray and the vet palpated her, she was pregnant.

Fast forward to last night, she gave birth to 2 stillborn babies unfortunately. And she ate the body of one of them (I saw the head remaining there).

I called the vet and she said it’s normal for bunnies to do this and so on. I don’t know much about this and I don’t know how much I can trust the vet.

Is this act normal? Will eating the dead baby harm the mom? Also, the mom has been having contractions or is “pushing” a lot. She still bleeds. I am bringing her to the vet after tomorrow (covid has the neared vet closed where I’m at and other vets don’t know anything about bunnies).

Is it possible there’s another bunny inside her? I’m panicking and don’t know what to do, I never had a pregnant bunny before. I have 4 bunnies but all were separated and spayed/neutered.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!!

          Hi Lu,

Not many members here have experience with baby rabbits or pregnant rabbits since intentional breeding discussion isn’t allowed. You might post on the rabbitsonline.net forum as well, as there are more members there with this type of experience. If the vet has said things are normal, I would just keep any eye on her until you can take her for a check up (making sure she has plenty of food and water), and is eating and pooping ok. The ordeal is likely stressful for her, so try not to hover too much.

Thank you for rescuing her and getting her vet care!

This info might be helpful to you (some of them might not be relevant though since the babies didn’t survive):

To answer your initial question – No, eating a stillborn kit will not harm her. This isn’t necessarily “normal”, but it does happen occasionally.

I would be more concerned about the contractions and bleeding you are observing. It’s possible there is another baby and it is stuck. You have an appointment for tomorrow, which is good. Hopefully she will be OK until then.

              How is she doing now?
