I had talked about using a pumice stone for grooming rexed rabbits and it really does work great. The pumice stones sold for grooming however are usually big for horses so I made a video here to show the one I use. It is a gnawing cube for chinchillas made of pumice and it is the perfect size for stripping shed fur off a rex.

This is my mini rex Neigey who is very cooperative!

This really works? I’m gonna try that for Lolli. Maybe it’ll go over better than brushing. lol

Neigey seems to enjoy that… and he feels great while you are grooming and you get the excess hair off of him

I loved that video— So sweet. Neigey was just so satisfied, “feels good”.

yes, only for rexes. It does not work at all on other fur because all longer-type furs plug up the pores in the pumice stone too fast. But it works better on rexes than any brush I have tried.

I will have to try that for the rexy boys! Dennis is so scraggled looking right now, his shedding is driving me crazy!

Dennis’ back is the worst right now! Dexter’s face is all crinkly from his weird face shed right now.

oh, for the face I curved my pumice thing, it was a perfect 2″ cube but to do their face you need a curve in it. I just ran mine over a wooden log till it was ground down into shape.

Most petstores will have them but they are called dental chew blocks.

That is a good idea to get the curve in it. I don’t think the petstore closest to me has them but I will have to look. If not I will be getting one soon!

Don’t you worry about tearing up Neigey’s skin with that? I mean, I’m sure you don’t go too hard when brushing but still…with my luck Fiver would bounce away and he’d lose a chunk of pelt from his spine. 0_o

May have to try it though. Fiver boxes any other brush that you bring near him. I could sneak up on him with this.

Neigey = love. He is SO precious!

The pumice is recommended for rexed fur. You don’t have to push down very hard for it to grip the hairs but of course, any rabbit who is very uncooperative during grooming could get injured by any instrument used, I imagine. Mine is very smooth though as I sanded it down on a wooden log to curve it, and this also took away any rough spots in it.

I ordered mine! I have to figure out though how to get a curve in it. I don’t have any logs or safe outdoor surfaces to rub it on?

do you have a wooden rolling pin? or else you can just use some sandpaper to shape it. It will work even flat, though.

I could probably use a dowel too. Yes the flat edge will work too, as their shedding is more on their back anyway.
