Pulling out fur???

Oh I just love asking questions to you guys, I always get great responces. Its better than searching the web and not really finding out what you wanted to know.

Ok, so Smooches sometimes pulls out her fur, and its not like she is pregnant or having a false pregancy because she doesn’t lay it down to make a bed. She also most of the time keeps it in her mouth. When I see hair everywhere I have to tempt her with lettuce and if she doesn’t eat it or I see fuzzies in her mouth I have to go in there and pull out lots of fur. (Its like one of those magic tricks where the magician keeps pulling out a super long never ending hankerchief)

She doesn’t do it a lot, She did it when I first got her and I thought she was stressed out. But she is used to me now and she did it this morning, I had her with me on the couch and we were cuddling then I started to fall asleep and she hopped down by my feet and I thought she was going to sleep too. But then I feel her pulling, I thought she was trying to eat the blanket, But then there was hella fur!!! So I put her in her house- cause she feels safe there (never pulls out hair there) and gave her a piece of papaya to make sure she didnt have hair in her mouth and if she did swallow some it would help her.

is she spayed? it might be false pregnancy… i don’t think they have to necessarily make a nest… is she eating plenty of hay and veggies to keep everything moving? does she seem aggressive or territorial?

She is getting spayed in 2 days- I’m going to ask the vet about it too. I’m hoping it will stop after the spay. She does eat lots of hay and veggies. I dont think she is being territorial at all. It seems like she does it when we turn our back or leave the room, like she gets scared that we left her maybe? Its sad I feel so bad, I want to know what she is feeling.

The spaying will help but do discuss it with the vet as well.

She probably does feel safe in her house too though. You do need to give her playtime outside her house too though.

is she in a somewhat busy, family area of the house, or by herself in a separate room/area? most rabbits like to be somewhere where they get plenty of interaction since they are such social animals, but that isn’t too loud.

Her ‘house’ is in the dining nook. And she usually hangs out in the family room. She is very social and will smell new people who visit and ask for loves. 3 adults live in the household. But as I said she does this when-i think- she feels scared or alone. She doesnt do it if everyone is home hanging out and she is hopping about the family room.

agraybun-Has she come through her spay well? What did the vet say about the hair pulling?

False pregancies don’t always mean that a nest will be built. She can just be going through some of the motions. Also, some rabbits are very sensitive to some food smells…especially meat. Since she’s in the dining room……???

The spay went well, I was very nervous though because I have never got a bunny spayed before and she didnt eat until 20 hours after, then like another 15-20 hours later. But about now- one week later she is doing very well and eating a lot since she lost a bunch of weight on the first 5 days. (shes only 5 lbs anyway)

Binky- she is in the dining room but we dont eat there   or cook much for that matter. But she has not pulled fur since this occasion, and I hope now that she is spayed if she does do it I will know that its not because of the hormones–I would rather her never do it though I hope the spay did it!

Kokan- I got her spayed with the SPCA, and they said that I would meet with the vet, but it seemed like she was in such a hurry and I was actually so nervous I forgot until I left that I wanted to ask about it

If she does this again- we will be going straight to the vet!

I’m glad her spay went well. It does usually take 2 to 3 days for the females to fully recover from a spay so that was pretty normal.
