So my male rabbit Harvey is still having issues with pulling out his fur. I have had issues for almost a year not. It was gotten worse recently. He pulls it out where ever he can reach. He is going to the vet again next week, but I was wondering if anyone has had issues with this. He is about 2 years old, neutered, and is a small lionhead.

        Things that I have tried:

-Changing to a different type of litter

        -Giving him more toys

-Getting another bunny (He has a bonded mate now)

-Testing for skin parasites and other skin issues. I know its not something that could be transmitted because my other bunny would be pulling her fur out too.

-Getting him to eat more hay

-Switching to free feeding, so that he wasn’t stressed to eat his food quickly. My female eats faster and then eats his food

-Telling him “NO” whenever I see him pulling his fur so that the behavior is not reinforced

At the vet I am going to try getting an x-ray of his teeth so we can rule out dental problems.

Does anyone have ideas about this, or experience dealing with this? Would appreciate any advice, feeling so frustrated that I cannot help him.

Have you watched him pull his fur out? Is he leaving bald patches on his skin?

Usually for males, fur plucking is a sign of stress.

Wooly pulls his own fur when he is stressed. It got to the point where the vet suggested melatonin for him. I give him 1mg tablets, crushed up and mixed with something.

Does Harvey do this constantly? Or does there seem to be a pattern to it?
