Thinking of getting a covered litter box for my rabbit to help keep his digging concealed and hopefully some of the accident poops in the box too..

Big question–If I get him a covered litter box, is he gonna treat it like a den and never leave it? He’s a house bunny so I’d like him to still be as friendly and loving as he is, not use the covered box as a hideaway…

He may use it as a hideaway, but really rabbits should have hideouts anyway, he will come out when he likes. I would just be worried about ammonia and litter fumes causing respiratory issues when he is in the covered box.
LuluCuteness-Can you cover up the wire? Don’t want Lulu to get sore hocks!

just get a BIG litter box,,t hat way you can fill one half with hay.

purina just restarted production of their Second Nature litterboxes. they had discontinued them in 2012.
                they are THE best. http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10152178087551620&set=a.125330706619.137445.124193741619

Rabbits like having 2 exits, many I know of don’t like using covered litter boxes. Not to mention, the ammonia smell would get trapped int ehre, making it unpleasant for them, resulting int hem not using it.

I’d just get a bigger litter box

Good point, I was thinking he might not like the smell either… and he uses my cats, which they’re both great with and I clean it 2x a day, but hes a digger so I actually just ordered one slightly bigger with higher sides on the 3 walls.. maybe that’ll stop some of the litter being kicked out?

If you want to stop the digging, the easiest thing to do is get a grid to go over the top of the litter. The pee can go through, but they can’t get at the litter to dig. You can even make one yourself with supplies from the hardware store.

I wouldn’t recommend a covered box for many of the reasons others mentioned. Rabbits don’t like to go to the bathroom in their dens, and they like to have multiple exits, so they don’t typically like covered boxes. Also the ammonia smell could be very strong unless you clean it every day.

Another disadvantage to covered litter boxes – your bunny may climb ontop of it, then pee through the vents in the top into the litter below, making a giant mess.

Ugh…. don’t ask me how I know this.. *sideways glance at ZEUS!*

I think it was in the Rabbit USA magazine this year that said breathing in the ammonia smell is bad for their respiratory systems – which is why we decided not to convert to the covered litter boxes.
