So my husband has been working on the hutch again. He has actually made a lot of progress. The trim is on, the ramp is made, the legs are attached. He is in the process of  making the front doors right now. We got some storage shelves that he disassembled with bolt cutters and the panels will be framed out in wood. So all that is left is the front doors, the hide box, the hay holder, the ramp leading down to the floor, and the finish. I am hoping that we will have it finished before we go on our trip, but I’m not so sure.

Here is a pic. Note that the lid will have hinges on it and can be propped up for additional ventilation. My husband said something about making a locking mechanism so it can’t move from its propped position. I put a rabbit-sized stuffed doggie in there for size comparison. We have decided to put the hidey house and hay holder on the top right so the buns won’t be able to go flying from the second floor if the door is open on that side (the ramp down to the floor will be from the bottom floor on the right side).

Yes, it is going to be elaborate and will have cost a fortune by the time it is all said and done. But my silly husband insisted that it look like a piece of furniture. It also isn’t huge because otherwise it wouldn’t fit through the door. But they will only be in it at night anyway, so I think it is okay.

Gosh it looks funny in the picture. Does the forum resize images? It looks so short length-wise, but it is really 4 feet long.

You should start selling these! I love it!

LOL, I don’t think anyone would want to buy one. The wood cost us a fortune!

Hmm, I bet. I am envious though. I have two xpens and while they are very convenient, I do wish I invested the money in something like this!

Thanks, I am hoping it turns out the way I was hoping. My husband has gotten mad at me several times because I “worry too much” about the buns. He had originally bought some other wire paneling that was pretty flimsy. He was going to have to cut it up and I was worried that there was too much give in the “bars”. I didn’t want someone to try to push their head through so… we found the storage shelves instead. Thankfully they were on clearance at Home Depot. They are probably the cheapest part of the hutch.

Oh, I need to find a picture of a hay holder to show my husband. They are wood and they have 1 or 2 holes cut out for a rabbit to put their head in and get hay out.

That’s really nice! Are holes going to be drilled for more ventilation on the sides? Are you going to line it?
I need to rent me someone to build stuff for me…

No holes on the sides. I asked my husband about it and about got my head bitten off. But he is making it so the lid can be propped up for extra ventilation. I’m not sure if we’re going to put screen in the gap or what.

My husband got one of the doors made. He sat it inside the hutch, so I thought I’d take a picture.

I really like that very bunny safe! What is the wood you are building it out of?

PuddleJumper – Yes, I feel pretty comfortable with it. I guess it was a good thing we found those storage shelves on clearance at Home Depot. The wood we used is actually oak. That’s why I said earlier that this thing was insanely expensive.

Beka – Thanks! Doesn’t it look nice? If you haven’t figured out how anal my husband is when it comes to this kind of stuff, you will probably see once he has this thing built.

That’s so beautiful! I hope to build a hutch like that someday. I cannot wait to see it finished! Where did you get the wire on the doors? I really like it.

Oops, sorry, I didn’t see this post. The wire on the doors is actually a couple of storage shelves we got at Home Depot. They were cut down with bolt cutters to fit inside the frame. It looks like we have stalled out again with the hutch. With classes starting, somebody hasn’t been too focused on getting this thing finished. *sigh*

I see! That’s really clever. I’ll have to remember that. I like powder-coated wire.
