We have been working with Obie and Biscuit recently. We started off in small neutral spaces. Things were going well. Biscuit groomed Obie, he gave her some nuzzles and there was no real aggression. So we decided to try them in the room that will eventually be theirs. It’s still neutral. Things were going well, they explored and paid attention to each other a bit. So we added a lityerbox and some hay/water. This went well for about an hour when they suddenly decided to work on dominance. It’s was just the circling dominance dance, no mounting. I split them up and made them spend a minute next to each other, calm, with me petting them. Then we ended the date. We tried another date today. We started them in their eventual room. They ignored each other and explored. Finally, they got together. It started off with grooming but ended up a dominance scuffle of some sort. I repeated the same “be calm and nice” for a minute thing before I ended the date. This date only lasted about 25 minutes. Should I put them in a smaller space again? Or does this seem to heading the right direction?

I would just keep going as is unless there is aggression. They need to work out the dominance issue (circling and humping) and can’t be bonded until they establish this. Try not to separate them unless they are being aggressive. If aggression does break out, then you can try going back to a smaller area for a while.

Another date with Obie and Biscuit tonight. Biscuit kept asking for grooming and Obie just looked grumpy by it. So I started rubbing her nose. All of a sudden, he was interested. He ave her a few licks and snuggles his nose down by her nose. But for some reason, while I pet her, he would flick/shake his head. Maybe I annoyed him? There was a little nipping and Biscuit groomed him a bit. But! She was standing next to him looking at something and I saw him lean into her. Lol then when she moved, he got huffy. He tries to act tough, but I see through it! Lol
