I was searching amazon and found these products that I’m thinking about buying. I was trying to find a bigger bag of pellets because they don’t have 5lb bags at petsmart and it’s $13. I found a 50 lb bag of the oxbow pellets for $58…that would last us about 10 months and we’d probably share with my parents to feed Mickey. A 5lb bag lasts us a month. Also trying found wood pellets, but hopefully they’ll have them at Tractor Supply when we go this week.
Here’s the link to the pellets: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0017JDGC2/ref=ord_cart_shr

Here’s what we were going to get at Tractor Supply…is that the right kind? http://www.tractorsupply.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay_10551_10001_130688_-1______
I found a local fireplace store that sells wood pellets so if you can find somewhere around that sells them that would be preferable – a 40 lb bag of wood pellets would cost a whole heck of a lot to ship.
As far as pellets go, that brand is very good, but I would worry about keeping them fresh for 10 months!
How long do pellets last? I could give my parents 1/2 for my first rabbit, Mickey.
Well Tractor Supply isn’t to far from me, so hopefully they’re in stock because I don’t want to buy them online and have to pay shipping. I don’t know anywhere else around here that might sell it. Looked in Lowes but nothing there.
It would probably be ok if you split it up – I think most pellets retain their nutritional value for about a year unopened… 6 months opened and stored in a dark, cool place. I can tell you most bunnies don’t care, though! Haha. Frankie would still dance for them if they were petrified!
For woodstove pellets look at home improvement stores- Home Depot, etc- you can also look and see if there is a place that sells pellet stoves in your area- they would carry the pellets of know who would.
I looked at that bag of food on Amazon and shipping was $40 for a 50lbs bag! How much are you feeding per day- if you are only feeding 1/4 -1 /2 cup of food a day- even for 2 rabbits that would last a long time and you would have to come up with a way to keep it sealed and fresh. I have been buying my Oxbow pellets from Drs Foster and Smith in 10lb bags- they recently added the 50lb bag to their stock list. But it is only 2.45 more to buy 5 ten pound bags than it is to buy 1 fifty pound bag- and it is worth the little extra to keep it fresh. (Not that I have ever bought 5 bags- but now that I added a 3rd rabbit I might buy 3 ten pound bags at a time). And DFS shipping rates are based on dollar amount of order- not weight of order. I place and order every 3-4 months because I also buy 5lb buckets of salt mix for our saltwater fish tank. They also do carry some of the hays in larger sizes too- Zupreem and Oxbow.
Thanks, I’ll remember that for future use! I was going to decide to just go for the 10 lb bag but it’s the same price as if I’d go to the store for shipping
I also go to Tractor Supply to get my litter. The Tractor Supply stores around here do not sell the wood stove pellets, instead I usually buy the bags of horse stall bedding. It is called “Lone Star Bedding” or “Equine Pine.” Both of these are very cheap and work well, so if they don’t have the wood stove pellets you can ask if they have either of those products in stock. They always have them in stock at my local Tractor Supply.
As for the pellets – my local rabbit rescue is an Oxbow distributor so I buy the boxes of pellets from them. It is cheaper because they get a break on the shipping because they buy a lot at once. You could check local rescues to see if they order lots of pellets and if maybe you could bundle a purchase with them to get a break on the shipping.
I just noticed that the Binky Bunny store has more Oxbow products including the timothy pellets! (and organic pellets!).
One way to extend the shelf life of pet foods like dog food, cat food, bunny food would be to freeze the food- BUT if even the slightest bit of moisture gets into bunny pellets they turn to mush. I know some of my vet clinic clients buy prescription foods (dry kibble) in bulk and freeze the rest. And I have frozen parrot food for 24 hours to make sure there were no bugs (since I bought it in bulk and it had a high dried fruit ratio).
Thanks guys!! I’m going to Tractor Supply today and am glad I checked this just in case they don’t have wood pellets. When I come back I’ll check out that site…amazon just seems to expensive to me. That 10 lb bag seems good, I’ll have to look further to see how much shipping is.
I get my wood-stove pellets from OSH. Couldnt’ find them at any Home Depot or Lowes around here. In fact, I had to call 3 OSH’s to find one that carried them, and talk to several people on the phone before I could find someone who actually understood what I was asking for…it’s a challenge…
Went to Tractor Supply today and couldn’t find wood stove pellets but it’s a good thing I went on here before I left because I found the Equine Pine and bought that. Haven’t tried it yet, will probably change the litter tomorrow.
I like the stove pellets a little better, cause they’re a little smaller (Equine Pine feels a little out of scale to little bunnies). But lots of BB members have good luck with them, so I’m sure you’ll be fine!
If you guys have a Rural King you can get a huge bag for $5 !!
Nope, no Rural King around here….actually never heard of the place haha! I put in the Equine Pellets (after he started digging at his old litter grr!) and will have to see how it is.
I think that you will have good luck with it, it has worked very well for me in the past. If he is a digger however, you might need to get a grate to go over his litter pellets because the equine pine will expand as it absorbs the litter, and turn into a kind of “sawdust” that seems to be quite tempting to digging bunny feet ![]()
Where do you get a grate? Yeah I saw it turns into sawdust and I’m like that’ll be lovely if he starts digging, but it seems like he only digs if he’s mad and wants attention.
