I brought Shadow in for his neuter this morning around 9am. I called at 5 and the vet was not happy with how quiet he was. She told me they had trouble removing his testicles even though he is 7-8 months old. She may want to keep him overnight. Is this unusual. I have to call back at 6 to see if there is any change.
I just had it in my head he would bounce back and now to find he did not is freaking me out.
*** BIG Hug*** ***Vibes for shadow***
I can’t answer your question except that if he’s observed overnight that might be better then you trying to watch him? I know some vets like to send them home as soon as possible so that they can reduce the stress, but if their worried then maybe overnight is best?
Maybe it will make you feel better to go see him (when you would have picked him up) and just see him and talk to the vet, then decide about leaving him overnight. If he made it through the surgery that’s good then right? *hugs*
Hang in there. I think it shows that you have a good vet if she wants to keep him overnight for observation. Many vets would just send an animal home regardless. Cadbury stayed overnight when she was spayed and although I missed her, I knew she was in good hands.
Please keep us posted, and healing vibes for Shadow. ((((((((Shadow)))))))
Actually, going to see him may be a bad thing. I was told at the clinic that Dr. Harvey works at that they don’t want you to go see the bunny while they’re recovering. They are happy when they see you but when you leave, they feel like they’re being abandoned again. Buns are a much more delicate animal than cats or dogs so sometimes their bodies have a little trouble with the anastesia. I think that you should do as the vet suggests – even if it is an overnight stay.
Ahhh touche!! Good Point Markus!!
Well there is no hard and fast rule as how to handle a bun. Everyone else said for me to keep the two of my guys next to one another in seperate cages as they’d get to know each other. Marcy at SaveABunny said that I should have put them in different rooms as it just helped fuel Maryann’s desire to get rid of him. The House Rabbit Society is all about keeping new buns right next to and near one another when bonding while the Bunny Haven says that they should be given a larger space so they have room to get away and do other things.
I just know that if my bun was having issues with recovering from surgery, the last thing I’d want to do is give him something more to be depressed about. Don’t get me wrong, I”d go crazy at home and if something happened I’d be extremely devastated but deep down I’d know that I was doing the right thing.
I think your vet is doing a good thing…..our nose twitches go out to you. I was actually planning on keeping Leo at the vet overnight after his neuter. He has a tendency to stop eating post anesthesia, so I wanted him to stay overnight so he could be given fluids and watched for an extended period of time to make sure he was eating and all. Keep us posted!
Mimzy stayed overnight after his neuter: partly because it was vet policy and partly because we live a long ways out of town and it would’ve been ridiculous to think of dragging him right back home after such a procedure.
They sometimes do have a little trouble with anesthesia. I think considering the situation, it would be best to leave him where he can receive prompt care in case of complications. I will send prayers for healing and Mimzy and Pip send bunny noserubs to Shadow.

Thank you all! You would think I have never had spayed and neutered pets, but this is the first time I have had it done to a rabbit. I spoke with the vet. She only handles cats, rabbits and other small animals and comes highly recommended. When I called back, she told me she was keeping him. The problem was his testicles had adhered to the scrotum, making removal more difficult. I had never heard of that before, but is happens when rabbits get older in most cases. He is being kept in a heated cage, on pain meds. Out of the 4 spay/neuters she did today, she had a spay that was up and eating like nothing happened and a neuter that had the same issue. She also told me that you never know how an animal is going to react to anesthisia. (I know this, but again, this is my baby we are talking about) I was welcome to come and see him, but in her opinion it would do neither of us much good.
I had no problem with him staying overnight, infact I am relieved he is getting that level of care. As I explained to Dr Saver, Shadow is such a chow hound and such a dare devil leaping off of tables and such, that it never occurred to me that he would not rebound immediately and go right for food. I was expecting to have problems keeping him quiet and still. She laughed and said that after I left him, they gave him hay and he all but inhaled it. And this was after I had given him extra pellets before we left.
So chalk this up to unrealistic expectations on my part and sticky testicles on Shadows part. Poor baby. And I will spend the night listening to the anti neuter rant of the boyfriend (who has spent last weekend assisting a trap, neuter, release of a feral cat colony he has been feeding )to make my day complete. Apparently, Shadows neuter is to close to home for him to contemplate.
Thanks again for all the good vibes…I knew I could count on you all.
Jean
Bunzai, I am sorry to hear about the complications but it sounds like you have a wonderful vet. He’s in very good hands and sending many bunny healing vibes your way!
Good News!!!!
Shadow is ok…Dr Saver said she was going to call back before she left for the evening and she just did. Shadow had his 2nd helping of veggies and some hay. So I can pick him up tomorrow afternoon. Whew!!!! Thanks again everyone.
Yay Shadow! Let us know how he is after you get him home! I want a full report!
So glad to hear all is well!
Oh that is an olympic report Jean, so wonderful to hear that he is going to be okay! ((((((more hugs for you and your clan)))))))
That is terrific that you have a bf who helps with feral cats. I have one that I’m taking care of, and I only wish she got along well with my two housecats. Soon spring will be here and she is already chomping at the bit to be let loose. (yes, she is spayed and getting nice and round for a whole winter of no activity to speak of and plenty of good food!)
And kudos to your vet too! Sounds like the kind of person I need to take care of Mimzy and Pip. (My vet is ok, just would like her to be a bit more sensitive to my bun’s needs.)
Looking forward to hear that Shadow is fully recovered and hoovering up the treats! ^^
I’m glad Shadow is okay! The rescue I help had a a couple of rabbits with encapsulated testicles that our vet had to work at getting to as well. One of them we thought was a female because we didn’t even check other than we didn’t see any testicles dropped and he was full grown.
Hi guys. Shadow is home and eating although no poops to be seen so far. Of course after all the reports of eating and pooping he was doing at the vets, he refused all of his favorite treats, gave me bunny butt and possible stink eye (hard to tell, it could have been the meds LOL). But after a few hours he is chomping away. It is so cute, he won’t eat if I am not there. The minute I come in…he jumps up runs to the nearest pile of hay or veg and starts to eat…like “see i’m eating”. He is already doing stupid things like jumping over the high side of the litter box, when he can just walk into the low end.
I had never heard about encapsulated testicles…and most of my animals, cats and dogs have been male, so I have had plenty of neuter experiences with them. Shadow kept his tucked out of site for the most part. I had him on his back once and I blinked, one minute you saw them and next you wondered if you were seeing things.
Dr Saver is a fantastic vet, very patient with nervous nellies like me. You can tell she loves the animals she handles. The down side is, as with so many other bunny vets…hard to get hold of in an emergency.
I can only imagine what Lisa and Dawn are going through caring for 6 neuters at one time….YIKES!
Edited to say: It just hit me, the title of my post was problem spay, when all the time it was a problem neuter! Duh!
Oh don’t you HATE how they have to be all macho and hop around over the litterbox side again and again?! >.< That absolutely frosted my cupcakes when I saw Mimzy doing that (needless to say I removed his sleeping shelf for a few weeks so he wasn't tempted to do a header off of it!) because I could just imagine what was going on in his head;
“See? *ow!* I’m *ow!* FINE *OW!* THANKYOUVERYMUCH! *OW!OW!OW!*
(shivers) I get queasy just thinking about it, and I’m not even a dude! I kept thinking “Maybe I should lift him in and out when he needs to go….” lolz
There’s probably a more scientific term but I cannot remember what exactly she called it – I’d never heard of this before either. It was more difficult for her to perform too – sounds alot like what happened with Shadow. It was almost like a spay I think as far as invasiveness.
i’m so glad he’s doing better! YAY Shadow!
I am glad your boy is home and eating. He is probably saving his poops to let them out all at once when you least expect it.
I have not heard about the encapsulated testicle thing, but I did take one bunny in for neuter who was a cryptorchid. For him, the surgery was an abdominal procedure because one of his testicles never descended. Even with no visible testicles, the male can still produce offspring, so the vet has to go into the abdominal cavity to remove the testicle.
i am glad everything is ok now! he will be fine dont worry hun! i have to have hopscotch done soon i hope he has no problems!
Osprey that’s probably what these bunnies had – maybe my vet was trying to put their situation into terms I could understand. I know about testicles that have descended and the description of this sounds like these 2 buns situation pretty much.
Mimzmum…that is so funny and so true! He has a double decker condo with a ramp. Walk to the bottom of the ramp, nope, over the sides. I had asked the vet should I confine him to one level and she told me not necessary. I am thinking of letting him out in the room. It is empty for the most part, I could remove his cardboard castles and the step ladder he like to climb. After what I went through last night to give him his meds, it just may be less stress for all of us to scoop him off the floor rather than try to give it to him in the condo (bad move) or have to extricate him (trauma for both of us). He is so damn difficult to handle for any reason, you have to keep such a grip on him, you think you are going to break something. Meanwhile at the vets, he is so cooperative you can just scream, he makes you look so bad for not clipping toenails or only doing 3 toes.
Kimberleyanddarren…I don’t know what set up you have, but if I had to do it again, I would just have a one level recovery pen to get better access. And really get your bun use to being handled by you. It seems the testicle issues are not that uncommon and now you know that it may be an issue but hopefully not. I had no idea, hence the panic.
Osprey, yes he was saving them all and now it is poop-a-looza. If anyone would tell me I would have an animal that would entail major conversations of poop and all its permutations and it would be cause for celebration I would have told them they are crazy.!
One of my bunny vets said that male bunnies can be known for “hiding their testes”. Its almost like their trying to be little transvestite bunnies….I’m so glad he’s home and eating up a storm. Did the vet give you any motility meds? I’m thinking since he was pooping up a storm at the hospital, she may not have found it necessary. Sending Shadow a mental craisin.
Skunklionshow…I’d hide them too if someone was going to nip them off. Seriously one minute I saw them, the next they vanished! I thought I was seeing things.
Yes the vet gave me metacam for the pain. Once a day for 3 to 5 days. He is eating but being picky, all of a sudden he wants greens and hay, and the pellets he would have killed you for he barely touches. The worst is the bunatude…he is mad at me (not that I blame him). He was on the first level of his condo and gave me bunny butt…then decided that was to subtle and went to the second level, thumped and then gave me more butt. At one point he chewed cardboard, all the time staring me in the eye as if to say, I am biting cardboard, but thinking jugular.
Thank you for the mental crasin for Shadow….got any spare mental vallium for me? I just gave him his meds and I am going to have a lie down. LOL

OMG! That’s so spooky…both Pip AND Mimzy have the habit of chewing cardboard and giving us the stink eye when they are not happy with something. 0.o
Yah, I’d keep my jugulars and my ankles out of reach for a bit until the memory fades. And it will, don’t worry.
Have a good nap! Huggles for you and Shadow!
To funny Mimzmum! That was a first, even the boyfriend was like whoa! LOL, when he finally gets back to having the run of the house, I will be napping with one eye open!
I have not heard about that happening either – but I am VERY glad to hear he’s doing well and was able to come home with you. I am so glad your vet was so patient and that you feel comfortable with her. It’s a good sign that he’s eating well and I’m routing for lots of healthy poops!
ps = I’ll edit your topic name to neuter
Yeah Bonzai!!
