We keep both of our buns, a lionhead and rex, in our room and it is fully carpeted and they each have their own litter boxes, one with hay and one with paper pellets. They don’t have sore hocks, but I have been reading and worrying myself to death about not wanting them to get them. Is there any precautions I can take to avoid them at all costs?

Something I do for preventing sore hocks is I give my bun multiple surfaces. He has fleece, carpet, tile, and memory foam. Also, make sure they are never on any wire, the main cause of sore hocks.

I’ve been advised by a rabbit vet to put soft (e.g. microfleece) blankets down on top of the carpet to ease the friction on my bun’s sore hocks. Haven’t been doing it for long enough yet to say whether it makes a difference, but hopefully it will.

Thank you all so much!! Everytime I try putting blankets down, they dig them right up and have them all over the place and they always seem to go and sit on the only piece of carpet haha. I shall tuck the corners under things & hope they like it!

A variety of surfaces, a healthy / low body weight, and a diaper rash ointment like Sudocrem at the first sign of trouble.
